Bad Wolf executive Jane Tranter has revealed that Doctor Who who fans will have longer to wait longer for more of the iconic sci-fi series than was previously thought.

According to the Royal Television Society’s Television Magazine, Tranter insists that Disney has always had the right to walk away after 26 episodes have aired.

“Then, and only then, does Disney+ have to make a decision about whether or not they want to do more.”

The 26 episodes include 3 Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials, 2 Christmas specials, two 8-episode series and 5 episodes of a spin-off. Of the 26, 21 episodes have already transmitted. The 5 episodes of The War Between the Land and the Sea spin-off are slated to transmit some time in 2026.

Tranter’s statement diverges from what Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies said in July 2024.

“It’s an industry decision, it’s like any business — these things take time. I think the decision will come after the transmission of Season Two. That’s what we’re expecting, that’s what we’ve always been heading towards.”

Tranter then diplomatically explained to Television Magazine why Disney will take longer than originally expected with a decision.

“I imagine, at a time when Disney are having huge cuts themselves, and there have been slashes in programme budgets, they’re looking to take their time to balance everything out and decide what they want to do.”

Steven Moffat on the TARDIS set

We recently reported that former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat was under the same impression regarding the wait until after the spin-off transmits. Tranter clarifies that the original deal specifies that Disney has until then to make their decision. Disney’s decision on Doctor Who won’t necessarily depend on how the programme’s spin-off is received — but that doesn’t preclude it from being a consideration.

Tranter assured Television Magazine that it’s not a question of “if” Doctor Who will return, but rather “when” and “how”.

“At its heart, it’s a BBC show and it will keep going, one way or another.”
