A furious row erupted on GB News as Express columnist Carole Malone hit back at commentator Benjamin Butterworth who branded flag-waving Brits “racist” and accused them of “not caring about this country.”
The clash came as the panel tackled the migrant crisis, with Butterworth arguing Britain should remain proud of its record in welcoming refugees. “We have a proud record of helping people around the world, we should help refugees,” he insisted. But Malone hit back, blasting: “The Government can’t cope with the volume. Why are we letting these people come in day after day when we don’t have to follow ECHR rules?”
The row heated up when Butterworth suggested demonstrations outside migrant hotels which have spread from Epping, Essex across the UK were fuelled by “disorder and racist views.”
Pressed by Malone on whether he really believed the protesters were "seriously racist", Butterworth snapped: “I suspect a lot of them.” As flags have been hung up across the country, Butterworth dismissed the public’s display of patriotism, responding: “These people don’t care about this country. They go around ruining town centres by spraying red crosses everywhere.”
That remark sent the studio into uproar, with Malone fuming: “This is tosh!" She raged: “Do you not see the frustration of people in this country, who are broke, who need a house, need a job, and see people coming in and getting all of that?”
It comes as three people were arrested during a protest against the housing of asylum seekers at a hotel in Essex. An organised march was held in Epping, where about 140 migrants are staying at The Bell Hotel.
Essex Police had a dispersal order in place and set restrictions on the protest, saying it must be finished by 20:00 and banners must not contain "offensive or inflammatory language". The force said one man was arrested on suspicion of inciting racial hatred while another man and a woman were arrested for breaching orders in place for the protest.
About 200 people gathered outside the Epping Forest District Council building where a woman climbed the steps and unfurled a Union flag before being detained by officers after refusing to leave. A spokesperson for Essex Police said her arrest was "categorically not for flying a Union Flag", but because the Civic Centre was not an area where protesters were allowed.
One man was arrested when he refused to leave the area after the protest had concluded, breaching a section 14 order. The man who was arrested on suspicion of inciting racial hatred was detained "after an emblem was reported to have been set alight" during a protest on Friday, police said.
