Robert Carlyle and David Tennant star in an upcoming true crime drama that explores the unforgettable phone hacking scandal.
The Hack is set to debut tonight, Wednesday, September 24, on ITV and ITVX, pledging to reveal the real-life events surrounding News of the World's notorious phone hacking controversy.
Written by Netflix's Adolescence writer Jack Thorne, The Hack will unfold from the viewpoint of investigative journalist Nick Davies (portrayed by David Tennant), who assisted in exposing crucial evidence.
The seven-part series will also be narrated through the perspective of former Met Police Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook (Robert Carlyle) who spearheaded investigations into the unsolved killing of private investigator Daniel Morgan.
News of the World collapsed in 2011 following a comprehensive investigation that revealed the organisation was involved in intercepting the phones of celebrities, Royal Family members and politicians to secure stories.
Thorne hinted that fans would witness a "never seen before" aspect of both Tennant and Carlyle in The Hack.
He revealed to Radio Times: "The Hack is a completely different side to David Tennant, an aspect of him that you've never seen before. It's [Robert] Carlyle doing something very different, too.
"It's about the phone hacking scandal, but it's the phone hacking scandal from the inside of it; it's two sides of the same coin that then reveal the truth of what was going on during that time."
The Hack's ensemble cast features numerous other memorable British performers alongside Tennant and Carlyle.
Inside No. 9's Steve Pemberton will portray former News of the World proprietor Rupert Murdoch, whilst Mr Bates Vs The Post Office's Toby Jones takes on the role of ex Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger.
The cast is completed by Hustle's Adrian Lester, The Crow Girl's Katherine Kelly, Line of Duty's Kevin Doyle, Poldark's Pip Torrens and EastEnders' Charlie Brooks.
During an appearance on This Morning, Carlyle remarked: "It's one of these things that people will maybe remember a little bit, but the full story of what actually happened is something that's been kind of buried for a long time.
"It's fantastically put together. Jack Thorne, the writer who's just done Adolescence, the brilliant Jack who I did Toxic Town with. He's wonderful, one of the best writers we have.
"He's managed to kind of, beautifully interweave these two stories."
The Hack premieres on Wednesday, September 24, on ITV and ITVX.
