Legendary bass musician Danny Thompson, who was founding member of Brit band Pentangle, has died aged 86. His management team confirmed he died "peacefully" at his home in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. In a heartbreaking statement, they wrote: "A musician who was both beloved and admired by everybody he worked with... his body of work is unparalleled in its quality and also in the incredibly varied number of musicians he worked with.
"Danny was a force of nature. A player who served the song and who enriched the lives of every single person he met. He will be sorely missed." Thompson had a successful career that lasted decades, working alongside music legends such as Kate Bush, John Martyn and Roy Orbison. He also famously played the bass guitar for Cliff Richard’s Eurovision song, Congratulations, which finished runner-up at the 1968 contest.
Folk-rock band Pentangle was formed in 1967, achieving a top five album hit with Basket of Light in 1969.
Thompson was one of the founding members alongside musicians John Renbourn, Jacqui McShee, Terry Cox and Bert Jansch.
Danny left the group a few years later, and went on to feature on the theme tune for beloved British sci-fi series Thunderbirds.
He went on to collaborate with June Tabor, Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, and The Blind Boys of Alabama.
One of his biggest musical achievements was working with Kate Bush on her hugely successful albums The Dreaming (1982) and Hounds of Love (1985).
Tributes have poured in for the legendary musician, as
Cat Stevens said: "My beloved friend and brother in faith, Hamza (Danny) Thompson, just passed away. Back to the Creator, Who guided him to peace."
Musician Ryley Walker said: "Danny Thompson passed away. was lucky to tour with him. best story teller ever met. super loyal to his friends and family. he got really emotional talking about them. Lovely sweet man. spent hours in the van schooling me on jazz. absolute fanatic. never left him. RIP to the man."
One man said: "RIP Danny Thompson. If you are a fan of #70s / #80s music, you would have heard some of his wonderful bass playing, one of my favourites being David Sylvian’s ‘The Ink In The Well’ from “Brilliant Trees."
Another added: "Hearing bass legend Danny Thompson has left us. From Pentangle to Nick Drake, John Martyn to Kate Bush there’s no one he didn’t elevate with his groove. Will pay tribute with a track on the radio show tonight from 8 on BBC Radio Ulster & Sounds."
Thompson is survived by his wife Sylvia and his son Dan Junior.
