Friday's This Morning welcomed beloved Downton Abbey star Lesley Nicol onto the sofa, where she sat down with presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary for an intimate discussion.

The performer spoke candidly about all matters relating to Downton Abbey with the presenting duo, in anticipation of the franchise's third and concluding film, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, arriving on 12 September.

Lesley, who portrayed Beryl Patmore in the beloved period series, revealed insights about her experience working on the programme throughout the years, alongside some exclusive behind-the-scenes revelations regarding the cast's alcohol-fuelled celebrations.

She additionally reflected on her collaboration with the late Dame Maggie Smith, who brought to life Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham.

"He wrote 18 kind of leading characters. It was a proper ensemble, and in the middle of it you've got a world famous star, Maggie Smith, who never wanted to be special or different, at all. She wanted to be part of the gang and she was," Lesley recalled. 

Alison subsequently enquired: "You didn't speak to her for the first six months? You didn't actually speak to her?" before making clear that she wasn't referring to Downton Abbey, but to real life.

"Yeah, probably! I was a bit scared of her," Lesley confessed. "But, in the end, we used to have really good chats."

She subsequently revealed: "In the show, I don't think I ever said a word to her. I don't think I did!"

Dame Maggie featured in Downton Abbey from 2010 until 2015. In 2024, the legendary actress died at the age of 89 at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the concluding film in the beloved franchise, sees a host of original cast members return to their roles, including Paul Giamatti and Dominic West as Harold Levinson and Guy Dexter respectively.

The film also introduces fresh faces to the ensemble, with Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale and Arty Froushan all set to make their debut, reports Manchester Evening News. 

The plot summary reveals: "Follows the Crawley family and their staff as they enter the 1930s. When Mary finds herself at the centre of a public scandal caused by her divorce and the family faces financial trouble, the entire household grapples with the threat of social disgrace.

"The Crawleys must embrace change as the staff prepare for a new chapter with the next generation leading Downton Abbey into the future."

This Morning airs on weekdays from 10am on ITV1 and Downton Abbey is available to stream on ITVX
