A political drama which won a massive 100 awards over its seven year-run has been hailed as "the greatest show ever made". The West Wing, depicting the political and personal lives of fictional Democractic US President Josiah 'Jed' Bartlet and his staff, first aired in 1999, and ran for seven seasons, before ending in 2006.

Starring Hollywood royalty Martin Sheen as President Bartlet, along with an incredible ensemble cast including Rob Lowe, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford, and Stockard Channing, the show won 27 Emmys, at the time tied with Hill Street Blues as the most won by a drama series. This record was later surpassed by Game of Thrones.

Created by writer and director Aaron Sorkin, the man behind films including A Few Good Men and The Social Network, it was notable for its dynamic "walk and talk" dialogue, featuring continuous, moving shots of characters having fast-paced conversations while walking down hallways. Although it often explored serious, real-life issues such as foreign policy, Aids, and terrorism, The West Wing is memorable for its snappy, quippy style.

It even sought to mirror real-life events. In the weeks following the attacks of September 11, 2001, a special episode was rapidly written, filmed, and broadcast, hitting screens less than a month after the attacks. It featured the White House placed into lockdown after a staff member is suspected of being a terrorist, and featured discussion of Islamic terrorism, although no direct references to the real-life attacks.

Other notable episodes include the season two finale, Two Cathedrals, widely hailed as one of the best episodes of TV ever broadcast. The episode features Martin Sheen as President Bartlet giving a chilling monologue in Washington National Cathedral as he prepares to announce whether or not he will run for a second term following the funeral of a beloved staff member.

The show has an incredible 95% rating on TV and movie reviews website Rotten Tomatoes, with one viewer calling it "the greatest show ever made". Another said: "Even after 20 years since its first season, The West Wing is still relevant. The show provides quick-witted dialogues, challenging situations, and a good balance of humour to the White House world.

"The characters are interesting and are portrayed as nice individuals who have to take some tough decisions, eventually making mistakes, but always with good intentions. Something like a Democratic dream version of Camelot.

"The world would be a better place if we had people like Bartlet, Josh, Toby, Sam and Leo. But unfortunately, it's more complicated than that."

But others were critical of the way it depicted the Democract-run White House, with one viewer saying: "Dramatic propaganda about far left democrats in the only universe in which their policies actually work - the land of make believe."

Another said: "Some interesting stories and insights into US politics but overly idealistic, preachy, folksy and smug. Production values are not great either: colours are always drab and the people seem to be perpetually working in dim light."

However, a more enthusiastic reviewer wrote: "This is one of my favorite shows in the entire universe if not my favorite one. Every season was fantastic imo! With the recent political events I’m finding myself falling into that universe. It changed my life."

The West Wing is available to stream for free, with adverts, on Channel Four. It can also be bought or rented on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, or YouTube.
