Racist messages have sparked outrage after they appeared across a major UK city overnight.

And more graffiti directed racist slurs at Muslims and Pakistanis, with other messages telling immigrants to "go home."

Alongside this, there where also messages mentioning the far-right group, the English Defence League (EDL).

Merseyside Police told local media that it would "not tolerate hate crime in any form" and was working to try and find out who was behind the messsages.

Some of the graffiti is in the process of being removed by local authorities.

Initial complaints where raised to the Liverpool Echo, afer locals saw messages and swastikas appearing under canal bridges, and even on walls in the heart of Merseyside.

Complaints had also been reported in local Facebook groups.

One resident wrote on the social media platform: "Their grandfather's will be turning in their graves - swastikas? [...] Bootle was the most heavily bombed borough in the UK!"

The user added: "Battle of the Atlantic anyone? Docks? [...Countless people] had to be evacuated from Bootle because of the bloody swastika - shame on you who did this!"

Another, who saw the graffiti on a canal bridge, took to social media to write: "Every bridge [along the canal] had offensive and racist graffiti. I am absolutely sickened by this."

'We will not be tolerating this filth'

Residents have expressed outrage at what one called "absolutely sickening", sayinf that they felt it was "co-ordinated and organised".

Speaking to the local press, a local council leader, Marion Atkinson said: "I am extremely disturbed by this disgusting graffiti. This is absolutely unacceptable and we will not be tolerating this filth.

"We have had these hate crimes reported to us by local residents who are as outraged and disgusted by what they have seen as we are and we will be taking action to remove it."

She added: "We are not having it. These are hate crimes and we will be working closely with the police to work to make sure whoever did this is caught."

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We will not tolerate racist and hateful graffiti being committed in our community and we are carrying out enquiries to find the perpetrators.

“It's sickening that people think this kind of behaviour is acceptable, and they can daub such racist graffiti which has upset and angered many locals in the area.

“Some of the graffiti is not only criminal damage, but it spreads hatred in the community. This hateful behaviour is deplorable and does not reflect the views of the community.

“I would appeal to residents or anyone who may have information which could help us find those responsible to come forward. I also urge people to check your CCTV, doorbell and dashcam footage in the area to see if it has been captured the suspects in the act.

“We have a specialist team of officers who are dedicated to investigate any form of hate crime, and will actively look into all reports we receive and proactively investigate to bring offenders to justice.

"We will take the strongest possible action against those who have behaved in this unacceptable way."
