Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner has declared he possesses information to end the "scandal of the century".

His claims raise the prospect he withheld knowledge on the disappearance of Madeleine in Portugal in 2007 despite being in police sights for more than five years. The newly-freed rapist, 49, hinted of a dark secret as he shopped for a phone, reports The Sun.

Shop manager Farouk Salah-Brahmin, 32, said: "Brueckner told me he had some information." The news comes as Brueckner registered as homeless after prison release.

"I don't know if it's the McCann case but he said he had evidence that could bring the scandal of the century to an end," he continued.

"He said he would end all the accusations against him. He said he can bring his own solution. He said something about USB sticks."

Brueckner had refused to answer any questions on the case while in prison, or engage with police.

Shop manager reveals 90-minute conversation

Farouk added of their 90-minute chat: "The way he said it he must have been talking about the Madeleine McCann case. What else could he be talking about?

"It sounded to me like he was part of something wider. Something he clearly had knowledge of. Some network or something maybe.

"I thought maybe he knows other people who were involved — but it's clear he knows far more than he had been telling the police.

"That struck me as weird — that he said he had knowledge of this but hadn't told police. I don't understand why he would do that."

Shop CCTV captured Brueckner spending £90 on a Xiaomi Redmi Android phone and buying a SIM after producing his ID card.

Suspect fears for his life over secret information

The shop boss said: "He told me that he has special information about some people, and that's why they want to finish him.

"I don't know if it is linked to all the USB sticks and information they found at his lair.

"Brueckner told me there are some people out there who 'want to make him cold'.

"He told me, 'I won't do long here — maybe someone will murder me.' He made it sound like there were people from his past — maybe from when he was a paedophile.

"Maybe he had clients who are worried about being revealed. He was a client of someone famous? I don't know."

Monitoring tag becomes source of amusement

Brueckner then showed off the monitoring tag.

Farouk added: "He said, 'Look, I'm under control' then started laughing. It was weird. He clearly finds it funny and he thinks it's unfair.

"He told me his case is finished, the prison is finished and we have the GPS. He clearly wants to get on with people, win their confidence.

"But to find funny a tag you have to wear — because you are so dangerous — is crazy."

Suspect parties

Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, was spotted partying in a nightclub less than 48 hours after being released from prison.

The 49 year old was allegedly seen drinking in a disco in his new town shortly after his release.

However, it's reported that his cover was blown when he entered a shop at a main railway station and caused a commotion among the women present, according to an insider who spoke to the Mirror.

The source revealed: "Brueckner is famous in Germany now so the women in the shop instantly recognised him and started screaming.

"Brueckner pulled up his trousers to show his ankle tag and started saying, 'I'm innocent, I'm innocent'. No-one in this town wants him here, it's just creating a problem for everybody.", reports Birmingham Live.

Brueckner now lives privately

It's believed that Brueckner was residing in a dilapidated farmhouse on the outskirts of Praia da Luz when Madeleine, then three, vanished from her parents' apartment in the Algarve while they were dining nearby.

Almost two decades later, the young girl remains missing, with the investigation into her disappearance still ongoing.

Brueckner is reportedly now living in a private flat provided by the German state, after declaring himself homeless.

He was initially placed in a homeless hostel before being moved to other accommodation just hours later due to concerns for his safety.

Brueckner had been spotted being driven away from Sehnde prison, near Hanover, on Wednesday before being photographed making a beeline for a McDonald's.

As part of his release conditions, he must wear an electronic tag for five years and faces being recalled to jail if he breaches any of his bail terms, including relocating without informing probation officers.

Despite an extensive police probe, investigators appear no nearer to charging him over Madeleine's disappearance, which he refutes any connection to.

He was also acquitted last October of a series of sexual offences he was alleged to have committed in Portugal.

However, prosecutors are currently awaiting the result of an appeal against those verdicts, filed in Germany's Federal Court of Justice.

Additionally, he has been summoned to appear in court next month in Oldenburg where he faces charges of insulting a prison guard and could be ordered to pay a penalty.

Brueckner's solicitor Philipp Marquort has pleaded for his client to be left in peace. He stated: "Mr Brueckner has served his sentence and he is now a free man and as such he completely has the right to live without being disturbed or hounded.

"The prosecution have no evidence against him in the Maddie case - even though they say they haven't been able to find any exonerating evidence.

"But either way what's important now is that he has been released and deserves to be left alone and those trying to pursue him against his will, we will take legal action against them both at the civil and the criminal court level."
