Manchester United's long wait for their first back-to-back Premier League wins under Ruben Amorim continues after a woeful 3-1 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. Starting their new front three for the first time, Amorim was hoping to build momentum after the win over 10-man Chelsea at Old Trafford a week earlier.

But an embarrassing start saw Brentford lead 2-0 after 20 minutes through two Igor Thiago goals, both of which were woefully defended by United. Benjamin Sesko's first United strike pulled the Red Devils back into the contest but Bruno Fernandes saw a second-half penalty saved after a four-minute delay taking the spot-kick. Mathias Jensen confirmed Brentford's three points with a stoppage-time effort to condemn United to a third defeat of the season inside just six games and leave Amorim in huge trouble.

Express Sport rates and slates the United players after another defeat...

Man Utd player ratings vs Brentford

Altay Bayindir - 5

Could do nothing about the first goal. Great saves to keep out Sepp van den Berg and Nathan Collins' headers, then pushed a cross straight to Thiago for the second. Dreadful positioning for Mathias Jensen's winner.

Matthijs de Ligt - 4

Completely lost underneath the ball for the second goal in a schoolboy moment of defending. Should have done more to block Jensen's shot that made it 3-1.

Harry Maguire - 5

Allowed Thiago miles of space to make it 1-0 by mistiming his offside trap and failed to stop the cross for the second goal. Solid in the air while defending long throws and set-pieces, at least. Subbed off.

Luke Shaw - 5

Too slow to react for the second goal as he watched Thiago run straight across him to score Brentford's second. Outfought by Van den Berg at one free-kick and fortunate the defender couldn't get a stronger connection.

Diogo Dalot - 5

Poor pass in attack led to the first Brentford counter they scored from and got bullied by Kevin Schade for one second-half chance that Bayindir saved well. But a lovely flick round the corner to Cunha in the move that led to the penalty.

Manuel Ugarte - 6

Good positioning to thwart one particular Brentford counter-attack and was a busy presence in the middle off the ball before being subbed.

Bruno Fernandes - 4

Not very involved first half and then booked for a poor tackle on Dango Outtara after the break. His penalty was well saved by Caoimhin Kelleher and that's now two out of three spot-kicks he's missed this season. Deeper role doesn't suit him.

Patrick Dorgu - 6

Put the high cross in that led to Sesko's goal. Was a regular attacking threat with his constant runs forward. Booked.

Bryan Mbeumo - 5

Well received on his return to Brentford. Put Kelleher under pressure from the cross that led to Sesko's goal and won the penalty after being pulled down by Collins but deliveries into the box were largely wasteful.

Matheus Cunha - 5

Too wasteful with his shots, constantly shooting from distance. Could have set Bruno Fernandes up inside the box with a clear route at goal but shot himself, which was deflected wide. Delivered a great cross into Mbeumo for the penalty.

Benjamin Sesko - 7

United's best player in the first half with some lovely build-up and hold-up play. Put United back in the game at the third attempt after seeing two quickfire shots saved. Starved of service second half.

Substitutes

Leny Yoro (Maguire 66) - 6

Good block on one Yehor Yarmolyuk shot.

Kobbie Mainoo (Ugarte 66) - 5

Hardly impacted the game.

Mason Mount (Shaw 81) - N/A

Has scored twice for United at Brentford. Couldn't make it three.

Joshua Zirkzee (Dorgu 84) - N/A

Headed a good chance over in stoppage time.
