War series are not in short supply over on BBC iPlayer but one you may have missed, which first aired in 2013, is still being hailed by fans. The series has been described as the "best British drama" and it had a unique beginning.
Our Girl is a British television military drama series written and created by Tony Grounds broadcast on the BBC from 2013 until 2020. The series began with a feature-length television pilot starring Lacey Turner as Molly Dawes, a young working-class woman, who joins the British Army after deciding her life is going down the drain. Following the feature-length pilot episode, a continuation show was commissioned, with Turner reprising her role for the first series, which commenced broadcast in 2014.
Turner then left the show after the first series leading to Michelle Keegan being cast as a new character, Georgie Lane, to serve as the new series' protagonist and the series ran for another three instalments.
The series synopsis reads: "Our Girl is a British TV series following female British Army medics through harrowing deployment zones and their personal struggles, beginning with Molly Dawes in Afghanistan and later featuring Georgie Lane as she rises through the ranks to face complex combat situations, from terrorism and civil conflict to humanitarian crises like child trafficking.
