After the highs of the last few seasons from finishing 7th, 4th and 6th, Unai Emery's Aston Villa are facing a mini-crisis. They are 19th after three games and one of only four Premier League sides yet to win this season.

As his players go away for international duty, Emery will no doubt spend most of the next fortnight trying to find a solution, with Villa the only team yet to score in the top-flight.

But for Matty Cash, who is a brand ambassador for Step One (a sustainable underwear brand), the feeling of playing under the Spaniard is on another level compared to the other managers he's played for and it's a squad that still believes it should be fighting for the Champions League spots come May.

'He's the most detailed and intense manager I've played under for sure,' Cash tells Daily Mail Sport. 'You just have to look at the detail he gives us on the opposition.

'Sometimes when we're on the pitch in training and the players are looking around because the details can be a bit long, he shouts at us and tells us he's been looking at it for 20 hours. It makes us switch on but it shows how much he goes into to help us prepare for the game. No disrespect to Dean (Smith) and (Steven) Gerrard - they're good in their own ways but for that next level and to deliver the transition that Unai's done at Villa, you have to be detailed and hard-working,' the Villa defender adds.

Before they started their season against Newcastle, Cash recalls a meeting that lasted the same length as a full match.

The side sit 19th after three games and one of only four Premier League sides still winless

'They're long but so interesting. People often say to me 'Do you get bored sitting in there for two hours?' and I know we've been doing it for three years now but we're actually zoned in and that's why we've been quite successful in recent years.

'For example, if we're on the attack and creating chances, he'll be looking at where me, (Ezri) Konsa and (Tyrone) Mings are because he wants the defence to be moving all the time. That little attention to detail is a big difference,' the 28-year-old insists.

Cash is also keen on adding more goal involvements to his game after just one goal and two assists last season. In the season before, he managed eight and a lot of his pre-season focus was on fitness and finishing.

'I had a few injuries at the start of last season so I've changed it up a little bit in terms of my strength stuff. Being available for the team is really important,' he says. 'And I've done some extra work in front of goal because I want to add more goals and assists to my game going forwards. Last year was not enough really.

'I spoke to the manager last season and he was happy with me defensively but he said he wanted me to add a bit more going forward but then again, we did have to defend a lot more in those Champions League games.'

It is bittersweet knowing they won't be in the Champions League but in Emery, who has won the Europa League four times, Cash and Villa fancy themselves to go the distance in Europe's second-tier competition.

'Every boy's dream is to play in the Champions League. I don't want it to stop now. A lot of the boys would say the PSG game at home stands out from last season. We got knocked out and they went on to win it but everyone saw how good a team we were against that type of quality. Out of all the teams they played, we were one of the toughest tests for them,' Cash insists.

'We've got an experienced manager in the Europa League which can be quite beneficial. But the main priority for us is the Premier League and then focus on Europe when it comes. It's a tournament that we want to try and win. We've got an experienced coach and fingers crossed we can do well.'

Cash will also look to take on the challenge of winning the Europa League after a season in Europe's top tier last term

Either way, it's an exciting year ahead for the man who used to work in a toy store at the age of 16 when he was released by Wycombe. Cash, who applied for Polish citizenship in 2021 through his mother, is in the Poland squad for the World Cup qualifiers this week against Netherlands and Finland.

After playing against France and Argentina at the 2022 World Cup and ending up with Lionel Messi's shirt courtesy of Emi Martinez and Kylian Mbappe's, his eyes are very much on creating more memories next summer too.

'They're framed up,' he says. 'Playing in the World Cup and getting to the last 16 was fantastic and having a bit of a shirt collection was good but playing against the best in the world is where I want to be because I feel like I belong on that stage.'
