NCIS favourite Brian Dietzen has opened up on a core memory he had with Ducky star David McCallum.
NCIS will soon be back on our screens for season 23 with actor Brian Dietzen once again reprising his role as the sweet chief medical examiner Jimmy Palmer.
Long before he was leading the CBS police procedural’s medical department, it was Donald “Ducky” Mallard (David McCallum) who donned the scrubs.
He went on to become NCIS’ part-time historian following his semi-retirement in 2019 and four years later, on Monday, September 25, 2023, McCallum passed away.
Dietzen has since taken to Instagram to share a memory of his late co-star as well as an unusual gift from a fan.
The 47-year-old revealed that he was moving and found a present of a McCallum action figure from when he starred in the 1960s action series The Man From UNCLE.
In the post, Dietzen explained: “Fun story with this one: a fan sent me this original Man From Uncle toy several years ago. How cool, right?
“Then I read the letter enclosed and discovered that this person had hand sewn scrubs for the doll so it could be a Jimmy Palmer/Illya Kuryakin mashup.
“Two of their favorite shows in one box!”
Dietzen went on to comment: “I showed David at the time and he gave one big ‘Ha!’
“Well done, and thank you to the creative person behind this one of a kind piece!
NCIS paid tribute to McCallum in the show itself with the episode The Stories We Leave Behind which aired in February 2024.
Co-written by Dietzen, Ducky had sadly passed away and features the team working on one of his unfinished cases.
The episode was also a memorable one as it featured a surprise cameo from actor Michael Weatherly as former agent Tony DiNozzo who returned to pay his respects.
NCIS season 23 premieres on Tuesday, October 14, on CBS.
