Nuno Espirito Santo has been announced as the new manager of West Ham United just 18 days after leaving Nottingham Forest. The Hammers sacked Graham Potter on Saturday morning and have confirmed Nuno, the former Wolves, Tottenham and Forest boss, as his successor. Nuno only left Forest - having taken them back to Europe by finishing sixth last season - because of a public falling out with the club's hierarchy. The Portuguese coach publicly admitted that his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had turned sour.
But he's back in the Premier League less than three weeks later and will face Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in his first match in charge on Monday night. West Ham owner David Sullivan is also thought to have held talks with former manager Slaven Bilic before opting to appoint Nuno. Wolves head coach Vitor Pereira was another who was looked at.
Confirming the appointment of Nuno, West Ham said in a statement: "West Ham United is delighted to announce the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo as the Club’s new men's head coach. Nuno has signed a three-year contract with the Hammers and will take charge of his first match on Monday evening when we travel to Everton in the Premier League.
"The Sao Tome-born new head coach took training at Rush Green on Saturday afternoon ahead of the trip to the Hill Dickinson stadium on Monday evening. Nuno will be assisted in the interim by academy coaches Mark Robson, Steve Potts, Gerard Prenderville and Billy Lepine, with a further announcement on his coaching and backroom staff to be made in due course.
"Everyone at West Ham United would like to welcome Nuno to the Club and wish him every success for his career in claret and blue."
The new manager said: "I am very pleased to be here and very proud to be representing West Ham United. My objective is to work hard to get the very best from the team and ensure that we are as competitive as we possibly can be. The work has already started and I am looking forward to the challenge that is ahead."
On Saturday morning, the east London club said of sacking Potter: "West Ham United can confirm that head coach Graham Potter has left the club.
"Results and performances over the course of the second half of last season and the start of the 2025/26 season have not matched expectations, and the board of directors believe that a change is necessary in order to help improve the team’s position in the Premier League as soon as possible.
"The club can confirm that assistant coach Bruno Saltor, first team coaches Billy Reid and Narcis Pelach, lead goalkeeper coach Casper Ankergren, and goalkeeper coach Linus Kandolin have also left with immediate effect. The board would like to thank Graham and his coaching staff for their hard work during their time with the Hammers and wish them every success for the future.
"The process of appointing a replacement is underway. The club will be making no further comment at this time."
Potter had only had 25 games, in nine months, in charge at the London Stadium but leaves with West Ham second from bottom in the Premier League table after one win and four defeats in their first five games of the campaign.
The Englishman only won six matches overall with the Hammers since replacing Julen Lopetegui back in January. The ex-Brighton and Chelsea manager is now without a job again having taken a hit to his managerial reputation by struggling to make an impact at West Ham.
