BBC Radio 2 host Zoe Ball has revealed how she recently had to have a serious chat with her son after admitting he suffers from a similar issue to her.
While Woody looks to be following in his father Norman Cook’s (aka Fatboy Slim) footsteps by pursuing a career as a DJ, Zoe has noticed that the youngster struggles to take care of one major responsibility as he gets older.
During a recent episode of her Dig It podcast alongside fellow presenter Jo Whiley, the pair were asked by a listener how they have taught their children about the value of money while growing up.
Speaking about her own experience, Zoe explained that both her children have had jobs over the years, but Woody has always struggled with money because he is “really disorganised.” She said, “I’ve recently had serious chats with Woody about him getting himself together because he’s just really disorganised. Like, I’m quite disorganised, but he’d always get parking fines and I would just automatically sort it out for him.”
However, while she was generous enough to jump in and pay her son’s parking fines over the years, she explained how the kind gesture had an unintended effect: “But I think by doing that, I didn’t really teach him how to look after himself and how to budget because it was just chaos.”
Despite airing her worries that Woody’s disorganised nature had held him back from managing his finances properly, she explained that, after recently turning 25, he has become much better: “So he’s only recently, at 25, finally getting his head around budgeting and making his money last, because of course he works as a DJ. In the summer he does really well; in the winter there’s not a lot of work.”
After meeting in Ibiza in 1997, Norman and Zoe tied the knot in 1999. Since then, they have had two children: Woody, born in 2000, and Nelly, born ten years later.
In recent decades, Zoe has been a constant presence on the radio waves, presenting a number of shows for the BBC. However, her career highlight probably came in 2019, when it was announced that she would be getting her own show on Radio 2 after taking over from Chris Evans.
After a six-year stint, she stepped down from the show last December, explaining that the decision was motivated by a desire to spend more time with her family following the death of her mother from cancer. Earlier this year, she made her return to the station and is now heard presenting the Saturday afternoon slot on BBC Radio 2.
