Hollywood icon Robert Redford made a heartbreaking confession about the love of his life before his tragic death, aged 89. The late actor, who was best recognised in films such as The Sundance Kid and Butch Cassidy, died on Tuesday morning (September 16) at his home in Utah. As tributes flood in from fans and past colleagues, many also sent their condolences to his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, a German artist with whom he'd been married since 2009.
Although the couple never welcomed any children together, they had made romantic displays of affection together in public and at various red carpet events, where they were rarely seen without holding hands. Throughout the years, Robert opened up about meeting the "love of his life" and the profound impact Sibylle had on him, despite their significant age gap. While they kept the details of the relationships away from the spotlight, the actor praised his wife as a "very special person" who gave him a "whole new life".
In the AARP interview, the actor shared that art was the key element of their connection, as Sibylle is a painter, and after meeting at Sundance, they instantly hit it off.
According to the publication, Robert was "fingering the gold band on his left hand," as he opened up about his wife. He detailed: "She's younger than I am, and European, which I like, so that's a whole new life."
With their shared passion for environmental activism, the couple founded The Way of the Rain, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to "developing, producing and performing educational and artistic performances — themed and designed to promote public awareness to support the protection of our Earth".
While they did not have children together, the artist embraced being a stepmother to Robert's children from his highly publicised marriage to ex-wife Lola Van Wagener.
Together they had four children: Scott, Shauna, James and Amy Redford. Sadly, Scott died from sudden infant death syndrome at only 2 months old in 1959, and then their younger son, James, died of cancer in October 2020.
In an emotional statement a representative said that he died at his home at Sundance in the mountains – "the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved".
They added: "He will be greatly missed."
Among the heartbreak of losing two sons, the actor also had a tough upbringing as his mother died when he was just 10 years old from a blood disorder after she gave birth to his twin siblings, who also passed away immediately after birth.
Despite this, he defied the odds and flourished with a successful acting career, and he became an activist. After stepping down from making films, he became an activist. He is survived by four children and seven grandchildren.
