A Royal Navy warship and helicopter have watched over two Russian vessels in UK waters during a three-day operation with NATO. The Plymouth-based frigate HMS Iron Duke was deployed alongside a Wildcat aircraft from Yeovilton's 815 Naval Air Squadron to keep tabs on the Russian frigate RFN Neustrashimy and cargo ship Sparta IV. This was the 18th time in the past year that HMS Iron Duke has been called into action for missions like this one, having monitored a total of 25 Russian vessels during this period.

The Royal Navy said: "The operation is part of the government's ongoing commitment to safeguard the integrity of UK waters and protecting national security through the government's Plan for Change." Luke Pollard, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, said: "Russian warships are increasingly transiting through the English Channel. The Royal Navy protects the UK 24/7 to monitor Russian movements, ensuring the security of our waters and undersea cables.

"Alongside our commitment to NATO's Eastern Sentry, this is a clear demonstration of how the UK stands firm with our NATO allies to deter Russian aggression.

"The Royal Navy's steadfast dedication and professionalism are essential to safeguarding the UK, and the Government remains committed to providing our Armed Forces with the resources they need to keep us secure at home and strong abroad."

The Navy deployed radar systems and sensors to track the Russian frigate whilst it accompanied Sparta IV through the North Sea and English Channel towards northwestern France.

Close to Ushant island, a NATO partner assumed responsibility for monitoring Sparta IV as it proceeded towards the Mediterranean, whilst Iron Duke maintained surveillance of the Soviet-era vessel Neustrashimy during its return journey through the Channel and North Sea en route to the Baltic.

This coordinated mission started on September 20 and finished on September 23, with naval forces from four NATO countries involved.

HMS Iron Duke's Commanding Officer, Commander David Armstrong, said: "This type of tasking goes largely unseen, and as a ship's company we are extremely proud of our direct contribution to the UK's national interests; more specifically to the security of our energy, data, food and trade and to the country's Critical National Infrastructure.

"It is important as an island nation to steadfastly safeguard the security of our seas – the Royal Navy is focused and fully committed to the extremely busy military aspects of the broader maritime security mission."

The Wildcat helicopter joined the mission off England's South Coast following its deployment from Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in Somerset, gathering crucial intelligence from above regarding the Russian naval and merchant vessels.

It comes as drone activity was spotted overnight from Wednesday into Thursday near Aalborg Airport in northern Denmark, as well as three smaller airports in the country, police said.

Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said it seems that a "professional actor" was behind a "hybrid attack".

But he added that there was no evidence to suggest Moscow was behind the incursion.

NATO has said that it will respond to Russian aerial incursions “in the manner, timing and domain of our choosing” after last week’s violation of Estonian airspace.

Three MiG-31 jets entered the state's territory on September 19.

Earlier in September, Russian drones were shot down over Poland, and another was intercepted in Romanian airspace.
