A man has been jailed for sexual offences against 41 children he "catfished".
Stuart Latham, 22, from Wigan, pretended to be a 14-year-old boy to obtain indecent images from them, with a promise of cash or gift cards in return.
Latham was handed a 14-year-prison sentence at Preston Crown Court for child sexual offences including rape, blackmail, making indecent images and causing a child to engage in sexual activity.
He lured multiple girls, some as young as 11, by posting an advert offering a £200 gift card in exchange for indecent images. He later blackmailed them, threatening to leak the images if they requested their deletion.
The court heard that Latham abused two girls in person. Both victims delivered powerful victim impact statements. The first, who believed she was in a relationship with Latham, tearfully described her heartbreak upon learning of his other victims.
Her friend, also abused by Latham, confronted him, saying, “You have changed me. You have taken the child in me away.”
Police discovered a hidden phone in Latham’s wardrobe containing thousands of child sex abuse images, including hour-long Snapchat videos.
The case is one of Greater Manchester Police’s largest multi-victim online child sex abuse investigations, with victims spanning from Scotland to Bournemouth.
Authorities suspect there may be additional victims in the US.
Latham’s actions have had a profound impact on his victims, with the court noting the severe emotional toll.
Greater Manchester Police believes more victims may be yet to come forward, and has urged anyone targeted by Latham to come forward, as the investigation continues.
