Sophy Ridge demanded "call the gallery" after she lost all sound while reporting on Sky News. The broadcast journalist was stationed outside 10 Downing Street following the resignation of Angela Rayner, who stepped down after admitting to underpaying stamp duty on her £800,000 apartment in Hove.

The technical blunders started when Anne McElroy was discussing how Nigel Farage would benefit from the Deputy Prime Minister's resignation, before Sophy could be heard saying she had lost all sound.

"I've lost the sound of Anne McElroy," she said. As Sophy appeared back in the frame, she explained: "I'm just going to step out of this shot because I can't hear anything."

The baffled presenter demanded: "Can someone call the gallery now because I don't know if I'm on air or anything?"

She added: "Is the feed totally gone? Am I not on air?"

The screen cut to black before the broadcast returned to the studio, where Gareth Barlow was presenting. Ms Rayner resigned after claiming she had received incorrect legal advice that resulted in her underpaying tax when purchasing a flat in Hove in May.

She paid approximately £30,000 in standard stamp duty on the property. However, as she already effectively owned another home, she should have paid the higher second-home rate - nearer to £70,000.

In her resignation letter to the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Ms Rayner said: "I deeply regret my decision to not seek additional specialist tax advice given both my position as Housing Secretary and my complex family arrangements. I take full responsibility for this error. I would like to take this opportunity to repeat that it was never my intention to do anything other than pay the right amount."

Sir Keir Starmer told the politician “you will remain a major figure in our party” and will “continue to fight for the causes you care so passionately about” as she resigned.

Ms Rayner has resigned as Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary, which means the prime minister will need to hold a reshuffle of his Cabinet.

Lucy Powell has already been sacked as leader of the House of Commons, while Ian Murray has been forced to leave his position as Scotland secretary.
