Based on the book of the same name by Michelle Frances, the series shows Laura growing ever more suspicious of Cherry - but is she just being overprotective?
Viewers see two sides of the story - that of Laura's and that of Cherry's - and they are starkly different, but which one is correct?
Here is all you need to know about what happened at the end of The Girlfriend as fans discover what Cherry is really capable of.

In the final episode of the series, Daniel proposed to Cherry after regaining some of his memory following his accident.
While Daniel wanted to keep the news private, Cherry wanted to celebrate and she managed to convince Daniel to throw a party.
As things were looking up for the couple, the relationship between Howard (Waleed Zuaiter) and Laura was on its last legs as he was no longer able to cope with his wife's unnerving behaviour.
Not wanting to give up on her hunch, Laura visited Cherry's dad at his care home and found out he had fallen from a building whilst working at a building site and was lucky to be alive.
Needing more answers, Laura then visited Cherry's mum, Tracey (Karen Henthorn) who revealed her husband had left both herself and Cherry in debt.
Cherry had managed to track her father down in the hope of getting him to return to them, but in a fit of rage she had pushed him from the building.
With Laura having recorded the conversation as evidence for Daniel, she set up a meeting to explain everything to her son.
Meanwhile, Cherry defaced Laura's gallery after finding out what she had done, which left Laura's lover Lilith (Anna Chancellor) distraught.
Cherry was arrested at her engagement party for criminal damage, but her mum bailed her out, although she swore she wouldn't keep Cherry's secret about what she did to her dad any longer.
Back at Laura's home, Daniel confronted his mother and lashed out about her controlling behaviour.
Wanting him to know the truth, Laura put sleeping pills in Daniel's drink so he would not try to run away when she showed him the evidence.
However, Cherry managed to break into the house and a fight ensued between Cherry and Laura, which resulted in them both falling into the swimming pool.
As Daniel saw his mother attempting to drown Cherry, he dived in to save his fiancée and began holding his mother's head under the water.
Cherry shouted for him to stop, but by that point it was too late and Laura had drowned.
A flash forward showed how Cherry and Daniel had continued with their marriage and Cherry was expecting a baby.
In a sinister revelation, Daniel discovered Laura's phone which had been lost under the sideboard and he found the recording of her conversation with Cherry's mum.
Whilst hearing the truth about Cherry's violent nature, Daniel realised his mother had been right all along.
