Amazon Prime Video's The Summer I Turned Pretty has become a global hit, with viewers captivated by the love triangle involving Belly Conklin (portrayed by Lola Tung) and brothers Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) and Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney). Fans are eagerly awaiting the next episode and the crucial finale which will reveal Belly's choice, reports the Mirror.

The elder Fisher brother has left audiences swooning, and there's a compelling reason why many have fallen for this fictional character.

In an exclusive chat with Reach Screen Time, relationship guru Annabelle Knight explained that it's no accident that Conrad has amassed a horde of fans.

She stated: "Conrad's the classic broody type - he looks like he's got it all together, but underneath he's a total mess of emotions. Audiences love that contrast – the idea of someone holding back but still caring so deeply.

"Conrad shows his love without having to say it in the form of tiny things like helping Belly with her shopping, not letting her carry boxes, how he remembers the tiniest details about her, or those long stares when he thinks no one's watching."

"It makes his affection feel more intense and, for many of us, that's the ultimate romantic fantasy: someone who might not say much but whose actions speak volumes."

She proceeded to draw parallels between The Summer I Turned Pretty character and a Jane Austen figure widely regarded as the ultimate romantic hero: "In my opinion Conrad and Mr Darcy are cut from the same cloth – guarded, proud, and not quick to open up. But when they do, it's powerful because you know those emotions have been simmering all along.

"In some ways Conrad confessing his true feeling to Belly on the beach was very similar to Darcy's infamous confession. Both characters show us that sometimes the greatest romance comes not from grand gestures, but from the quiet intensity of someone who finally lets their guard down."

The programme has indeed generated numerous analytical pieces exploring why millennials have become passionate Conrad enthusiasts, with actor Briney's resemblance to 1990s heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio being one element, though significantly the character connects with the classic teen protagonists of 1990s and 2000s films and television programmes.

It's also noteworthy that the 1990s was an era abundant with period drama adaptations, especially of Austen's novels.

The romance specialist for Lovehoney also discussed how the notion of longing has experienced a revival in 2025, partly due to The Summer I Turned Pretty.

Knight explained that the "instant" character of our society, especially through dating applications, had caused people to start to "crave" the reverse - something the young adult series had achieved brilliantly by "slowing things down", allowing desire to build and the sensation of being "truly wanted" by someone else. She further explained how the Jenny Han drama evoked the "teenage nostalgia" of "wanting someone" and the uncertainty of their feelings being reciprocated.

The expert concluded: "Those moments of stolen glances, the hesitation, the 'will they, won't they' all leads into the massive build-up of emotions and attraction between Belly and Conrad. It's addictive to watch because it reminds us how powerful tension can be compared to instant attraction."
