Anti-immigration protestors have gathered at a Holiday Inn on the outskirts of Oxford to protest it housing asylum seekers. The small group was met by Stand Up To Racism counter-protestors, as well as police, yesterday, the Oxford Mail reported. Several protests have taken place at the sight in the last few months. In August, more than 100 people turned up, with 70 there in support of asylum seekers, the paper added.
A poster advertising the anti-immigration protest read: "Defend our futures, stop the boats, end the use of hotels, no to digital ID, we want our country back." Anti-racism protesters hoisted an image of Nigel Farage and Tommy Robinson being thrown into a bin, which read: "Defend refugees, bin the far right." According to an Oxford Mail reporter who was at the scene, there were around 20 anti-immigration protestors outside the hotel.
They waved St. George's flags, as well as Union Flags and flags of Israel.
But there were more individuals present in opposition to the protest.
Approximately 40 counter-protestors faced off anti-asylum demonstrators on the opposite side of Grenoble Road.
Asylum seekers living in the hotel in August said they didn't understand the opposition to their arrival, and want to become police officer or zookeepers.
Around 20 of them stood outside the hotel with the protection of security watching a demonstration in the summer.
Counter protests were also present outside.
One man, who did not want to be named, from Afghanistan and had arrived the UK around one year and five months ago before he spoke out.
In September, Sir Keir Starmer said Labour had shied away from addressing concerns over immigration in the past.
Writing in the Telegraph, the Prime Minister said it is now “essential” to tackle “every aspect of the problem of illegal immigration”.
Starmer also said he wanted to speed up efforts to empty asylum hotels before the next election.
Rachel Reeves had previously told MPs that the Government was committed to stop housing migrants at all hotels currently being used for the purpose by the end of the Parliament, which could be as late as 2029.
But the PM said he wanted to "bring that forward".
