The BBC has today (Thursday, 2nd October) confirmed the return of Steven Knight's popular period crime drama, Peaky Blinders.

Starring Cillian Murphy as Birmingham's notorious crime boss Tommy Shelby, the hit series is set to return for two more seasons, each comprising six episodes, and will be available on both the BBC and Netflix.

This announcement comes over three years after the show was thought to have concluded with the finale of its sixth series in April 2022.

In a statement, Knight expressed his excitement: "I'm thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story."

He added: "Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz", reports Birmingham Live.

"The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride."

The revival of Peaky Blinders will follow the release of the sequel film The Immortal Man, which is anticipated to bring Tommy Shelby's story to a close.

As yet, there is no announced cast for the seventh and eighth series, leaving it uncertain whether lead actor Murphy will reprise his role.

However, today's announcement hints at a fresh ensemble taking centre stage, as Knight teases a "new generation" at the helm.

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, also commented: "This game-changing show made a huge impact when it first came to our screens 12 years ago and it is one of the BBC's most-loved dramas.

"Steven has worked his magic once again and I can't wait for his scripts to be brought to life when filming begins in Birmingham. We are delighted to be working with Kudos, Garrison Drama and Netflix on this epic show. There's plenty of drama for Peaky fans to look forward to!"

A summary for the forthcoming return of Peaky Blinders teases: "Britain, 1953. After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel.

"In a new era of Steven Knight's Peaky Blinders, the race to own Birmingham's massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions.

"This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger: with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart."

Series creator Knight is returning as writer and executive producer along with Murphy.

Also executive producing are Karen Wilson and Martin Haines for Kudos, Jamie Glazebrook for Garrison Drama, Jo McClellan and Danielle Scott Haughton for the BBC and Mona Qureshi and Toby Bentley for Netflix.

Peaky Blinders is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
