Bungling prison staff attempted to save a convicted murderer who killed his own daughter after his heart stopped, despite his express wishes to not be resuscitated, it can be revealed today.

Nigel Malt, 47, was sentenced to life in prison in 2022 after deliberately running over 19-year-old Lauren twice following a family row.

The killer, who was estranged from his daughter at the time, died on April 29 this year at category B prison HMP Gartree in Leicestershire.

At an inquest on Tuesday it was heard Malt, who had several long-term health conditions, died from natural causes relating to heart failure.

But despite him having a DNACPR (Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), prison officers who found him attempted to save his life.

Staff members performed CPR on Malt for four minutes before realising their error, a report by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman found.

'While we appreciate that it was their natural reaction to start CPR, they should have been aware that Mr Malt had a DNACPR in place and respected his wishes.

'We bring this to the attention of the Governor and Head of Healthcare,' the report author stated.

Malt's next of kin did not wish to be contacted during the investigation into his death, they added.

Malt was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty in July 2022 of murder after crushing Lauren to death in his car while drunk and 'totally consumed by anger'.

He was handed a minimum term of 18 years, but this was increased on appeal to 22 years.

The killer, who was estranged from his wife and children, had argued with his daughter at her home in West Winch, Norfolk, where she lived with her mother and younger siblings, on January 23 2022.

Malt then threatened Lauren's boyfriend, Arthur Marnell, with a crowbar outside the property before getting into his car.

He proceeded to deliberately reverse over his daughter, before then driving over her a second time.

Afterwards, he put her body into the passenger seat and phoned estranged wife Karen to tell her that her daughter had died.

He then drove her to the shop where his wife worked before taking her to hospital in King's Lynn, where she was pronounced dead.

Karen Malt, fighting back tears as she read her victim impact statement at Norwich Crown Court in 2022, said: 'I remember the call saying 'I will bring your daughter over, she's dead'.

'I was screaming 'which one' to him down the phone but he wouldn't tell me.'

Describing the moment she saw Lauren in Malt's car, she continued: 'She was stuffed in the footwell. I saw her face and felt sick.

'I couldn't believe she had been stuffed down there. Seeing her in that position for me was worse than knowing she had been run over.'

'I can't fathom how a parent could kill their own child,' she added.

The court heard Malt had been drinking before the murder and, when tested by police, was found to have 170 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, more than double the legal limit of 80 milligrams.

A post-mortem examination recorded that Lauren died of significant traumatic injuries to her chest and abdomen.

The prosecutor said said that after Malt 'failed in his bid to inflict violence' on his daughter's boyfriend, 'he was totally consumed with anger' after she told him to go home.

They added that the 'estrangement from his wife and family no doubt fuelled his anger'.

Malt's wife, Karen, had reported him to police in April 2021 for assaulting her, the prosecutor said, with the defendant arrested and bailed at the time.

On the evening Lauren was killed, Malt breached his bail conditions and went to the shop where his wife worked and from there made 19 attempted calls to the landline of her home, where Lauren and her boyfriend were, between 6.25pm and 6.52pm.

Malt's 'persistent' calls went unanswered until the final one which was, and lasted one minute and six seconds.

Within two minutes of the call, he drove to the family home in Leete Way.

After Malt ran over his daughter, he said 'don't get the police'.

'The defendant's relationship with his family was broken and it was something he wasn't prepared to accept,' said the prosecutor.

At trial, he denied murder and maintained Lauren's death was an accident, but was unanimously convicted.
