Carrie Grant has been on screens for over two decades and is likely best recognised for her work on reality shows, Pop Idol and Fame Academy, where she worked as a vocal coach for the hopefuls alongside her husband, David. Having been professional partners throughout their careers, the couple also made waves on children’s TV as the presenters of CBeebies’ Carrie and David’s Popshop. Since 2010, Carrie has also been a regular reporter on BBC’s The One Show, where she covered various stories and segments throughout the years.
The stars also showed off their acting skills in 2020 after appearing in an episode of Hollyoaks, where their child, Tylan Grant, previously portrayed Phoenix Hathaway. Alongside David, the duo, who are celebrating 40 years together, host a Saturday breakfast show on BBC Radio London. However, despite their years of success on TV, Carrie admitted that she wished she did things differently. In a joint interview with the Daily Express, the mum-of-four revealed she would have started off on the airwaves before becoming a well-recognised face on screens.
The star shared: “You would think that having done decades of telly, that radio would feel like, ‘Yeah, of course I can do that’, but I wish I’d have done it the other way around.
“I really wish I’d done radio first, radio is a bit like journalism. I feel like you learn so much from having more time.”
Carrie explained: “On telly, you do an interview and it’s like three to five minutes and you’ve got to talk about everything in that space of time.
“Whereas on the radio, you have a much extended time to speak, you’ve got to learn how to drive a desk. You’ve got to learn how to do something like we do for over four hours. Four hours of radio is so different to a half-hour TV show, and I really love that.”
The vocal expert continued: “I feel like I’m still learning. I’m 60 and I’m still learning. It’s so exciting."
David, who seemingly agreed, added: “You get so used to time, structure, scripts in TV, that sometimes just showing up as yourself is something you don’t even think of.
“You think of precision, you think of timings and making sure that everything’s clear, but actually with radio, there is so much space in spontaneity, for laughter and for joy. Radio for us has been about just learning to be fully ourselves,” he concluded.
Away from the screens and airwaves, Carrie and David have launched a brand new venture and will be releasing Joy To The World, a vibrant gift book which explores the stories behind some of the world’s most famous Christmas songs.
