They were chosen for their grit to appear on Celebrity Traitors in front of millions of viewers.

But BBC bosses are said to have been stunned by how feeble some of the famous contestants were during their time at Ardross Castle in the Highlands as they took on fellow stars for the top prize.

Sources on the programme told The Mail on Sunday they were 'less resilient' than the show's regular contestants, and made far more use of the therapists kept on standby in case participants need mental health support.

A show insider said: 'Everyone involved with the show was quite surprised at how much the celebrities struggled mentally during the filming of the series. They weren't as resilient as the civilians who have taken part in the ordinary show. Like the normal series, they had access to therapists during the recording, but they had to work overtime with these stars.'

Singer Paloma Faith, 44, was the first to leave last week after Alan Carr, 49, 'murdered' her.

Speaking on the spin-off show The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked, the singer told how she was surprised that Carr had bumped her off as they were friends.

Ms Faith, 44, added: 'I don't think it was very nice. I maintain that if the shoe was on the other foot, I wouldn't have done that. So I don't think he should have done it to me and I'm surprised that he did.'

Speaking after her exit from the show, which is hosted by Claudia Winkleman, Ms Faith revealed she often went to see the therapy team during filming for the show in the summer. She added: 'It is not on camera – I went to see them all the time. Yeah, it was a therapist. I definitely learned some things about myself that I thought I had moved on from, from my childhood and everything.'

Referring to Carr's treachery, she said: 'I guess it is a game of trust, isn't it. So it is quite unsettling when you feel like everyone you know might not be as trustworthy as they seem.

'Everyone is playing a game and it is hard to rationalise.

'I was surprised at the psychological impact on me. I thought I would be able to keep thinking it was a game, but when you get in it you are quite isolated for a long time from the outside world as you are not allowed contact.'
