Emma Raducanu had her vital signs checked in a worrying moment while playing against Zhu Lin at the Ningbo Open. The young Brit was midway through the second set of her opening match of the tournament when she called for a medical timeout. She breezed through the first set without too much trouble but the taxing conditions began to take a toll as the contest progressed.
Raducanu was losing in the second set by four games to three when she approached the chair umpire to ask for the physio. She sat down in her chair as her vital signs were checked and she was given a quick examination. After a delay of several minutes, Raducanu was able to continue and won the next game on serve to draw level at four each.
Speaking ahead of the Ningbo Open, Raducanu said: "I think it's a special feeling. I feel very comfortable, I feel like I get amazing support here, which is so nice. I love how invested the Chinese fans are and how much support they give.
"I think where it’s different is just, it’s at the end of the season, so you need to push harder physically, you’re feeling it a bit more, and mentally as well, to just focus. That’s probably the biggest difference."
Raducanu took a trip to the doctor following her health scare in Wuhan and issued a positive update to her social media fans shortly afterwards.
She wrote: "Last day at the doctors in Wuhan. Feeling better now. Shame I couldn't continue there, but thank you for the messages."
Raducanu, who reached the third round at Wimbledon earlier this year, has won two matches since the WTA Tour headed to Asia for a string of tournaments in late September.
She was knocked out of the Korea Open by Barbora Krejcikova in her second match after defeating Jaqueline Cristian in her first encounter. At the China Open, Raducanu succumbed to Jessica Pegula after beating Cristina Bucsa two days earlier.
