Presenter Fiona Bruce was left with her brow raised after a tense clash on the BBC's Question Time took an unexpected turn. During the latest episode of the weekly debate show, the host was in Belfast and joined by a panel of politicians prepared to take questions from the general public. Fiona welcomed Labour’s Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland; from the Conservatives, Alex Burghart MP, Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary; John Finucane, Sinn Féin MP; Jonathan Buckley MLA, the DUP’s economy and business spokesman; and author and journalist Aoife Moore.

However, as the presenter asked the politicians, "Why are concerns about immigration branded 'far right'?" the debate became a heated row. Jonathan Buckley blasted: "Enough is enough, when it comes to pansying around on illegal immigration, control our borders..." But before he could finish his rant, Bruce interrupted to ask: "Did you just say 'pansying around?'" Buckley hit back: "Yes," and continued: "Control our borders and restore order. That's certainly a policy that I'll be pushing for and continue to."

However, as the DUP MLA went on, the camera panned to Bruce, who looked utterly confused at his choice of words, while viewers also noted that a pansy is a garden flower.

One exclaimed: "Oh my god, did he just say Pansy?" Meanwhile, others questioned Bruce's reaction as one viewer slammed: "He used the term correctly. The presenter chose the term she wanted to be offended by, hence the 'horrified' reaction. Pathetic really."

As one argued: "In the context of the discussion, there was absolutely no way this was said as a homophonic slur. Not even close. Context is important."

Elsewhere in the episode, Bruce was embroiled in a major "bias" row after she asked the panel about the ongoing conflict in Gaza and probed: “Can there be peace in Gaza without the involvement of the Palestinians?”

As the debate went across the panel, the presenter also repeatedly interrupted John Finucane MP, who attempted to speak out about his party colleague, who was among the activists detained while carrying aid to Gaza.

The politician stated: “Within the past 22 hours, a party colleague of mine has been kidnapped by the Israeli government. He was part of the flotilla that was intercepted in international waters.”

Before he could finish, Bruce interjected: “Is that the Flotilla with Greta Thunberg?” To which is promptly confirmed, and as he added: “This is a party colleague …” The presenter once again interrupted him and asked: “When you say they’ve been kidnapped, they have been detained, have they not?”

Finucane disputed: “You can’t arrest someone in international waters, let’s call this what it is. They have been kidnapped; there’s no lawful basis to take these people into international waters."
