Proper news from Britain - News from Britain you won’t find anywhere else. Not the tosh the big media force-feed you every day!

Being forced to sit for hours on a plane with no movement can often lead to a stiff neck and back.

But a holidaymaker has shared their DIY invention for avoiding this pain while flying, saving money on buying a travel cushion.

The Reddit user CassMistral wrote on the channel r/TravelHacks: 'Do you hate how airplane headrests force your head forward?

'A lot of people are like me and don't sit the way airplane designers think we should, and it creates a lot of stress on our necks.

'I figured out an easy way to get around this with one inch upholstery foam and an old pillowcase.'

The user then describes how to create a makeshift cushion.

They wrote: 'Measure the length and width of your back while sitting down and cut the first piece of foam this size.

'Measure your lumbar region and cut a second piece of foam this size. Put both pieces in an old pillowcase, roll it up, and put it in your carry-on until you get ready to board. This whole setup keeps me from arriving at my destination with a huge crick in my neck.'

One user commented: 'Interesting, so you are basically suggesting a spacer for moving your body forward so the head stay put?'

CassMistral replied: 'Yes. You can't make the headrest go back, so you have to make your body go forward.

'If a person is tall enough that they're already bumping their knees, then this isn't going to work, but it's great for short people like me.'

Another commenter said: 'That’s a very useful hack! Sounds way more comfortable than those overpriced travel cushions that never fit right.

'I’ve used a small inflatable lumbar pillow before, but the upholstery foam idea sounds both sturdier and easier to customize. Thanks for the tip, might actually save my neck on my next red-eye.'
