While I’m always up for a dramatic baby bombshell or a jaw-dropping DNA twist, the ongoing Emmerdale storyline involving Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) and her 20-year-old granddaughter, Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill), has run its course and needs to wrap up soon.
Sarah has endured more than her fair share of hardship on the ITV soap, ever since she was diagnosed as a child with Fanconi Anaemia - a rare genetic disorder that increases her risk of developing cancer. Determined to take control of her future, Sarah made the bold decision earlier this year to pursue IVF in hopes of having a child of her own. Tragically, during the fertility process, she discovered she had cervical cancer, leading to an emergency hysterectomy that dashed her dreams of motherhood.
In an unexpected turn, Charity offered to be Sarah’s surrogate, with Jacob Gallagher (Joe Warren Plant) as the sperm donor, giving Sarah renewed hope. But in true Emmerdale fashion, nothing is ever simple - especially for Charity.
Although Sarah, Jacob, and Charity’s husband Mack Boyd (Lawrence Robb) believe the pregnancy is the result of the embryo transfer, the reality is far more complicated. Charity had a one-night stand with Ross Barton (Michael Parr) around the same time, and upcoming episodes reveal that Ross is actually the biological father.
Now, Charity is contemplating a termination and considering lying to Sarah by claiming she suffered a miscarriage. If she goes through with this and the truth comes out, both Sarah and Mack will be left heartbroken and furious.
Frankly, the storyline is becoming increasingly far-fetched, and I’m uncomfortable with how casually Charity treats the idea of a termination, as if it’s no more significant than a routine blood test.
I also question the plausibility of Sarah - at just 20 and early in her career - being so determined to have a child. In today’s world, how many people her age genuinely feel ready for parenthood? What message does this send to viewers? While I have no doubt Sarah would be a loving parent, asking your grandmother to be your surrogate is, to say the least, highly unconventional.
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and ITVX.
