Wayward: Official trailer
Canadian comedian, actor and writer Mae Martin's career trajectory has been on an upward trend with their latest series, Wayward, becoming one of Netflix's most popular new shows this year.
The eerie small-town thriller features Martin in the role of police officer Alex Dempsey, who is investigating a school for troubled teenagers from which several students have mysteriously vanished.
After making a name for themselves with their hit Channel 4 drama Feel Good, also starring Charlotte Ritchie and loosely based on the creator's own life, their latest endeavour has catapulted the creator to new heights of success.
But what do we know about their personal life, including Martin's relationship status and some unexpected family ties?
Let's delve deeper into the star's life beyond their television triumphs, reports the Mirror.

Mae Martin's famous family
Martin was born to writer and teacher Wendy Martin and English actor and musician James Chatto, who later became a prominent food and drink writer in Canada.
Their grandfather was English actor James Chatto, who featured in several significant British films shortly before his death at the age of 61 in 1982, five years prior to Martin's birth.
Chatto's other son, Daniel Chatto, is an artist and former actor who married Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones, the daughter of Princess Margaret, making Martin an unlikely relative of King Charles III.
Troubled teens
Martin has disclosed that their new series Wayward was loosely inspired by their own teenage experiences.
They have previously been candid about their struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, which began when they were just 14 years old.
While working at the Second City comedy club, they decided to leave their all-girls school in Toronto to pursue a career in comedy.
However, at the tender age of 16, they were evicted from their home by their parents, forcing them to live with comedian friends throughout their late teens and into their 20s and 30s.
They revealed that older comics "took advantage" of them during this time and abusive relationships were commonplace, later dramatising this experience in Feel Good.
Gender and sexuality
Martin identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, coming out in 2021 via an Instagram post. However, they have stated that they "don't mind" being referred to as "she".
Later that same year, they underwent top surgery, telling British GQ: "I feel more relaxed about photoshoots as I feel more connected to myself."
They also told the publication: "I just feel like myself. I don't even feel nonbinary. I just wake up, have a coffee and go to work."
And they elaborated on their identity in their Netflix comedy special, Sap, in which they reveal they are taking low-dose testosterone: "You just have to take my word for it that I know who I am.
"This has been the best of my life", which they defined as "the absence of agony. It's a low bar. Who are we to deny anybody that?"
Martin plays the character Alex in Wayward, a trans man using he/him pronouns, describing the role as "juicy" to explore in an interview with Deadline.
Reality show relationship
Despite being a public figure, Martin is rather private about their personal life and little is known about their romantic history prior to fame.
They have openly identified as bisexual and have been involved with both men and women.
In December 2023, they confirmed they were dating media personality Parvati Shallow, a veteran competitor on the popular reality show Survivor.
However, earlier this year, Shallow revealed to People magazine that her relationship with Martin is currently "in flux", leaving fans uncertain about their current status.
Wayward is available to stream on Netflix.
