It's the BBC's big new hope for a hit TV game show – where contestants battle it out for a cash prize by potentially doing the dirty on each other.

But Richard Osman, the brains behind Pointless and his House Of Games series, has blasted The Inner Circle for 'unacceptably' ripping off an ITV classic.

The programme is hosted by Amanda Holden and sees six contestants whittled down to two during rounds of trivia.

It has been in the works since the BBC launched a call for new quiz formats in 2023 and earlier this month boasted more than three million viewers for its pilot broadcast.

But crime writer Osman, 54, likened the show's conclusion to Jasper Carrot's Golden Balls, which aired on ITV in the Noughties and forced contestants to split or steal the prize pool.

He said: 'It is a very traditional end game. I would say you can't use it if you've spent two years on a process saying: "We're going to come up with a new thing."

'I think that's unacceptable to use it on a show where there is very, very little money involved. It doesn't work.'

Presenter Holden also came under fire for being 'too nice' to front a show with a 'divisive' element.

'You want her with Alan Carr doing up a house,' Osman said on his The Rest Is Entertainment podcast. 'You cannot have a warm show that has a split-or-steal ending... It seems to be a wasted opportunity.'

The BBC has commissioned 31 episodes of The Inner Circle – including six celebrity specials – for what is likely a seven-figure fee.
