Music legend Jeff Cheen has died aged 80, his wife has confirmed. He was best known for his work with John Lennon, Deep Purple, Rick James and Pink Floyd.
His wife, Chunhong, announced that he died after fighting a long battle with cancer. He brought music to the world as he promoted concerts and helped to bring reggae, American pop and jazz to China. Cheen worked for some big name companies including Tetragrammaton, Mercury, Capitol and Far Out Music before expanding to the Asian market, consulting for the Ministry of Culture for the People’s Republic of China and for Ausmusic in Australia. His InterStar Music was the first Western company to enter into a joint venture with the Chinese to distribute pop and rock across Asia. Throughout his time in China, Cheen introduced American blues, jazz, and reggae to the country, touring with leading acts across Asia.
Chinese musicians soon began adopting the Western styles and Cheen produced two Chinese reggae albums, a Chinese jazz album, and a Chinese country album.
After living in Beijing and Hong Kong for 13 years, Cheen returned to the U.S. and landed a gig as VP business development for B.B. King’s blues clubs, overseeing worldwide corporate licensing.
His InterStar Arts Alliance later transitioned to marketing for musicians and relocated to Charlotte, NC, where he continued teaching the Business of Music at Catawba College.
As well as teaching, Cheen aimed to pass on his knowledge and expertise in other ways, too. He also joined the Pacific Coast Group to assist artists in recouping royalties owed them from streaming, songwriting and publishing in the Far East.
Cheen also founded the Charlotte Music Awards in 2006 and was a founding board member of the Hollywood Music in Media Awards.
He married his wife back in 2015 and also had two sons, Justin and Garrett, and two grandchildren, Henry and Eva. Family of the music legend are asking for donations in his memory can be made to Autism Speaks.
