Jeremy Clarkson has opened up about a medical ordeal that left him feeling he had experienced "the very definition of misery." The Top Gear and The Grand Tour star recounted a bizarre chapter from his teenage years when, in an effort to treat eczema, he was advised to use a sunbed — an experience that he says was far from relaxing.
The 65-year-old, who has just finished filming season 5 of Amazon Prime show Clarkson's Farm, wrote in his Sunday Times column about visiting the doctor in his younger days over the "annoying" medical condition. "As a teenager, I never once looked at my Breville toasted sandwich maker and wondered what it would be like to climb inside," Clarkson wrote. “Which is why, when the newfangled sunbed reached these shores from Germany in about 1980, I had absolutely no desire to give it a whirl.
"Annoyingly, however, I then developed eczema and was told by doctors that it might well be helped by a sunbed. So I stepped inside and discovered what I think is the very definition of misery.”
Clarkson described the experience in vivid, unflinching detail. “You're hot. That's the first thing. And you're sweating, so soon you can feel a little puddle forming at the top of your buttocks.
"Which means you're lying in your own bodily juices, and maybe the juices of the person who was in there before you, and you can't move, and all the surfaces are hard, so you're uncomfortable, and you can't move and you are Jane-Austen-bored.”
Clarkson has previously revealed that he had such an extreme flare-up of the skin condition that it once resulted in him being "hospitalised for two weeks".
He said that his skin had become so badly infected, he had to be "completely mummified" by doctors in a bid to treat the uncomfortable condition.
While the sunbed experience was unpleasant, Clarkson’s health struggles didn’t end there. In recent years, the motoring presenter has faced more serious medical issues, including a heart procedure he underwent in 2024 after experiencing a "sudden deterioration" in his health.
The Diddly Squat Farm owner said that he had symptoms of feeling "clammy", a "tightness" in his chest, and "pins and needles" in his left arm after returning from a holiday.
Clarkson has also battled other long-term health issues. He has discussed weight fluctuations, cholesterol concerns, and the challenges of maintaining a demanding schedule while managing underlying conditions.
