The father of murdered young woman Hannah McGuire has been brought to tears after an extraordinary decision by a Supreme Court of Victoria judge.

Hannah McGuire, 23, was terrified of her estranged partner Lachlan Young, then aged 21, when he strangled her in the bathroom of their home and torched her body to make it look like suicide.

On Tuesday, her father Glenn was consoled by his wife Debbie as Justice James Elliott called for the minute's silence after hearing sentencing submissions from Young's barrister Glenn Casement.

Mr McGuire could not hold back his tears as the court fell silent.

'GIven the interest of the community and the circumstances of this case, I know it's been done elsewhere, but I'd like to have a minute's silence now, in memory of Hannah,' Justice Elliot said.

Young, sitting in the dock at the back of the courtroom, could be seen with his head down, it was reported.

The call for silence came a day after Ms McGuire's friends and family were forced to endure submissions by Young's barrister Glenn Casement aimed at earning him a reduced sentence.

Young faces life behind bars for the cruel way he ended his estranged partner's life and desecrated her corpse.

Mr Casement had commended his client for providing the full account of how he murdered his estranged partner.

The court heard Young killed Ms McGuire after luring her to their home in April last year under the guise of ending their relationship with a civilised discussion.

Young claimed Ms McGuire fled to the bathroom, where he assaulted and strangled her to death.

Whether any of that actually ever happened will never truly be known.

Forensic experts had little to work with what remained of Ms McGuire's mangled remains, which amounted to just 13kg of bone and dust.

Her cause of death could not be ascertained.

In a gruelling day for Ms McGuire's family inside the Supreme Court of Victoria in Ballarat, west of Melbourne, the court heard Young had made the vilest remarks about his partner after what was left of her body was found.

While faking sadness over his ex-partner's supposed suicide, his cousin remarked to Young that he used to refer to her as 'beautiful and hot'.

Young looked her in the eye and remarked: 'Well, she's hot now, isn't she?'

Young is facing a preliminary sentence hearing where he hopes to convince the judge he should not be jailed for life.

Young had pleaded guilty to Ms McGuire's murder in July, eight days into his trial.

The cold-blooded killer had tormented her friends and family since April 5 last year with a twisted story he cooked up, claiming she had suicided by setting herself on fire over the thought of losing him.

In reality, Ms McGuire was doing everything she could to get away from her deranged and abusive partner.

On the night he took her life, Ms McGuire made the fateful mistake of once again trying to appease the bully with whom she had reluctantly bought a home in March of the previous year.

It was the same home at 8 King Drive, Sebastopol – just outside of Ballarat – where she would die.

Crown prosecutor Kristie Churchill told the court Ms McGuire had shared a meal with friends at the hotel her parents owned in Clunes on the night she would die.

By then, Ms McGuire had already made it clear to Young that their relationship was over.

She had more than valid reasons.

Young had monstered her almost from the day they got together towards the end of 2021.

He had not even tried to hide his contempt for Ms McGuire, abusing her routinely in front of friends and family.

'F**k off, Hannah, you don't know anything,' he was observed telling her.

In June 2023, one of Ms McGuire's friends overheard Young talking to her on a Facetime call.

'You're a fat whale,' he told her.

Young also called Ms McGuire a 'fat slut' and told her to 'work faster and cook me dinner.'

By then, Ms McGuire had already made her mind up to leave him, but was struggling to work out how to safely escape.

She had obtained an intervention order against him in February that year, but knew it was not worth the paper it was printed on.

The court heard Young tormented Ms McGuire with endless calls, stalked her and performed burnouts outside a house she had moved into.

Despite his behaviour, she continued an on-again-off-again relationship with her abuser whose behaviour only became more erratic.

In the month before her murder, Ms McGuire moved back in with her parents and was forced to climb through a window of her old home to retrieve personal items.

On March 28, Young took to her car with an angle grinder, removing a canopy he claimed he had paid for.

In the safety of her parents' pub, Young told Ms McGuire via text that he wanted to see her one last time so they could part in an amicable fashion.

'I don't want to fight or be angry or anything,' he told her.

'I'm not going to get angry. I'm over being angry. I just want everything finalised and planned out.'

Little did Ms McGuire know, Young had already made plans to do horrible things to her.

Young's suicide claims were quickly dismissed by police.

When they came knocking, he made a run for it.

But he continued to deny what he had done.

'I would never f**king harm that girl,' he claimed.

In a statement read to the court by the police officer who charged Young, Mr McGuire, described his daughter as the 'light of my life'.

'She was kind, understanding and full of potential,' he said.

'The accused took everything away from her and from all of us. As her father I was supposed to protect her, supposed to be there to guide her ... instead I had to bury her.

'Hannah did not deserve to die, her life mattered and our pain and loss and broken hearts deserve justice.'

Ms McGuire's mum was inconsolable.

'I hope every day, for the rest of the accused's life, he experiences the most intense pain imaginable,' she told Young.

'While I commend people who can offer forgiveness, unfortunately for the accused, I am not one of them.

'I will never forget and I will never forgive.'

Ms McGuire told Young of her howls which echoed through the town of Clunes after she learnt her daughter was dead.

'Not only did the accused take Hannah's life, but he also attempted to elaborately cover up her death, setting her body on fire, treating her like discarded trash,' she said.

'He even sat for a moment to watch her burn.'

The hearing continues.
