With Christmas coming up, King Charles has a dilemma that many across the globe will resonate with - difficult family relationships. Does he invite his youngest son, with whom he has recently started to make amends, to Sandringham for Christmas and risk annoying other family relatives, including Prince William? Or does he keep Prince Harry out of the fold on the special day to please the majority?
Well, while Christmas may still be a good few months away, it appears the King has already made his decision. As reported by various publications, invitations for December 25 at Sandringham have already been sent, with one reportedly not having been sent overseas to Harry and Meghan's Montecito estate.
While this may not be a surprise for the King’s youngest son, 41, who hasn’t spent Christmas with his royal relatives for a few years, it could still cause some sadness.
However, there is one way around this whole Christmas dilemma, or at least in my eyes anyway.
Although it may be inappropriate for the King to invite Harry, who is still reportedly not on talking terms with his brother William, for the main Christmas celebrations, it could be a good idea to invite him a week or so before.
If the monarch, 76, invites Harry, his wife Meghan Markle, and their children Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, to Sandringham a week or two before Christmas, wouldn’t everyone be happy?
Harry would get a Christmas celebration with his father, his children would get to know the King - something they have reportedly missed out on - and the King would get this quality time with his son and grandchildren.
And all of this without the awkwardness that Harry being at Sandringham on Christmas Day would bring.
As a royal expert, I think such a gesture could go so far in continuing to heal the rift between Harry and his father, with last month marking their first face-to-face meeting in well over a year.
It would also no doubt mean so much to the King, who has reportedly been upset in the past about the lack of connection he has with Archie and Lilibet, who are being raised thousands of miles away in America.
With Christmas meant to be all about family, love, giving… a gesture like this could tick all of these boxes. And who knows, if it were to happen and went well, Harry may even find himself inching just that bit closer to being involved with the Royal Family’s special events again.
