Lioness season three has finally been confirmed to return for a third season, several months after it wrapped up its second season on Paramount+.

The gripping espionage thriller follows Avatar star Zoe Saldaña as CIA case officer Joe McNamara, who is in charge of a special branch of female agents.

As the head of a crucial element in the War on Terror, Joe struggles to balance her demanding career with her family life with husband Neal (played by Dave Annable) and their two daughters.

Hollywood legends Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman co-star as Joe’s boss Kaitlyn Meade and US Secretary of State Edwin Mullins, respectively.

The second season of the hit drama, created by Yellowstone producer Taylor Sheridan, introduced Genesis Rodriguez as new Lioness recruit, Captain Josephina Carrillo, enlisted to infiltrate the Mexican cartel after a US Congresswoman is kidnapped.

Plot details for the new season are under wraps for now, but will undoubtedly return Joe and her team back into the fold for a crucial new mission to keep their country safe.

Deadline reports that the delay to renew season three stems from the availability of the cast, as Oscar-winning star Kidman had to negotiate a new deal to return.

Season three was greenlit behind closed doors but not announced earlier this year, but Kidman is now confirmed to be back alongside Saldaña for the next outing.

Fans of the show have flocked to social media to celebrate the news, which arrived nearly a year after Lioness season two wrapped up in December 2024.

“Honestly this is well deserved. I love this show,” one X user shared.

“Season 3 is coming the story clearly is far from done! Paramount knows we are hooked this renewal is deserved,” another wrote.

The celebrations continued over on Instagram, where someone exclaimed under the Paramount+ official account’s announcement post: “About time!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!”

And another exclaimed: “Finally we got the announcement!!!!! Let’s goooooo!!!”

Many fans have also been making the same demand that Stephanie Nur returns as Aaliyah Amrohi, who became close with Lioness operative Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira) in the first season but was not present in season two.

“Can we get Stephanie Nur back??” one IG user asked with a praying emoji. And another demanded: “Bring Aaliyah back!!!”

Nur even reposted the season three announcement to her Instagram Story, with one fan commenting: “WAIT stephanie reposted the lioness season 3 announcement on her IG story… could this mean aaliyah is in s3?”

Viewers will just have to wait for further announcements to find out if their favourite pairing will reunite in Lioness season three.

Lioness is available to stream on Paramount+.
