Liverpool's list of problems continues to grow after a disappointing performance saw them lose 1-0 to Galatasaray in the Champions League. The Reds suffered back-to-back losses, following Saturday's reverse at Crystal Palace, thanks to Victor Osimhen's first-half penalty. To make matters worse for the Premier League champions, Alisson Becker and Hugo Ekitike both went off injured in the second half.
After a disappointing display at Palace at the weekend, Liverpool failed to respond in Turkey in a performance where they were flat offensively and nervous defensively. On seven trips to the country, the Merseyside club have now lost five times and won just once. Express Sport rates and slates Arne Slot's men after they suffered another defeat...
Liverpool player ratings vs Galatasaray
Alisson Becker - 6
Excellent one-vs-one save vs Baris Alper Yilmaz two minutes in but a little questionable for the penalty, which was far from unsaveable. Injured yet again after denying Osimhen one-vs-one. As keepers go, he's very injury-prone.
Dominik Szoboszlai - 4
Back at right-back but started badly, losing the run of Yilmaz in an early chance. Guilty of poor deliveries from set-pieces and gave away a penalty with a flailing arm. Moved to midfield after the hour mark but was his pass that forced Ekitike to stretch and pull a muscle.
Ibrahima Konate - 4
Looked to be playing better than he did against Crystal Palace... until a woeful pass invited Osimhen to score in the move that Alisson got injured. Just far too sloppy. Also seriously needs to work on his headers at attacking corners.
Virgil van Dijk - 7
Some brilliant long-range passes and was pretty commanding up against Osimhen. The captain was Liverpool's best player even if his sturdiness wasn't matched by his team-mates.
Milos Kerkez - 5
Involved slightly more in an attacking sense but without much joy. Needed more conviction when a ball fell his way at one corner. A bit too one-footed.
Ryan Gravenberch - 5
Below the standards he's set himself this season. Summed up when he lost the ball needlessly before half-time and then gave away a foul on the edge of the box. Booked and subbed on the hour.
Curtis Jones - 5
Gave away possession a few too many times but at least pulled off one superb recovery tackle early in the second half on Osimhen after gifting him possession. Didn't offer the control Liverpool needed in the middle of the park.
Jeremie Frimpong - 6
Deployed at right wing and was more involved than Mohamed Salah has been in recent games, but Dutchman was occasionally guilty of too many touches before getting his crosses in.
Florian Wirtz - 5
Gave the ball away in the move that led to the penalty. Had some nice moments, forcing a first-half save from a Frimpong knockdown, releasing Isak with a pass and finding Bradley with a backpost cross. But Liverpool still need far more from a man they've bet so heavily on. Doesn't look confident. Booked.
Cody Gakpo - 5
Good pass to release Ekitike for his one-vs-one and then had one cleared off the line soon after but otherwise too quiet.
Hugo Ekitike - 6
Excellent run for his chance and should have scored but tried to dribble past the goalkeeper instead. Had a clever backheel saved by the keeper. Moved to the left wing when Isak came on but taken off soon after because he pulled up stretching for a wayward Szoboszlai pass.
Substitutes
Giorgi Mamardashvili (Alisson 56) - 6
Didn't have to do much.
Mohamed Salah (Gakpo 62) - 5
Didn't get into the game enough bar one inviting cross into the far post.
Conor Bradley (Frimpong 62) - 5
Poor header wide from a Wirtz cross. Lacking match sharpness. Booked.
Alexander Isak (Gravenberch 62) - 5
First touch was a shot but he didn't connect cleanly. Then barely touched the ball.
Alexis Mac Allister (Ekitike 68) - 5
Curled one stoppage-time shot wide then put far too much on an over-the-top through ball for Salah. Another player not playing to his level.
