A new supermarket bakery product is winning rave reviews from consumers. Marks & Spencer is currently being praised by customers, after a brand new item was quietly added to the range.

The retailer has launched a chocolate version of the classic Pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart), which costs £1.10 and features a creamy baked egg custard and chocolate filling inside an all-butter cocoa pastry. Snaps of the sweet snacks have been doing the rounds on social media, including Instagram and Facebook. Fans of the new treat have described it as "banging", hailed the cost and labelled it as an excellent new addition to their personal snack menu.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, @MarilynDobbs1 commented: "Marks and Spencer’s are the best and no added artificial flavourings which we can’t eat or we’d get migraines. Other places don’t have the depth of filling or flavour. Even Pastel de Nata in Portugal sometimes have flavourings in - dreadful and unnecessary."

While on Facebook, Joe Midgley wrote: "One of the best products M&S have sold for a long time! Worth £1.10."

The team behind the @marksandspencergemini account over at TikTok made a video saying: "Honestly… 10/10. Run, don’t walk to M&S Bakery."

However, not everyone is a fan, as some people thought the chocolate filling overpowered the custard flavour.

A pastel de nata is a traditional Portuguese egg custard tart that has a rich, caramelized filling that sits in a crisp but flaky pastry shell. In Portuguese, pastéis de nata is the plural, meaning "cream pastries". The tarts are often dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon before serving.

This treat is often paired with coffee and is a popular accompniment to expresso which can be witnessed in Lisbon. These pastries are normally enjoyed fresh and warm from the oven.
