Peter Kay left a costly impression on music legend Eric Clapton’s luxury holiday home, all thanks to a paddling pool and a set of designer towels. The 52-year-old comedian formed a friendship with the rock icon, now 80, after meeting backstage at a gig. The bond was strong enough that Clapton invited Kay and his family to stay at his lavish 16-bedroom mansion in the south of France, complete with a stunning outdoor pool.

However, the comedian did not favour the cold water and opted for a more quintessentially British seaside experience, as he purchased an inflatable paddling pool from the local supermarket, which he filled with warm water and positioned on the rocker's luxurious sandstone patio.

“I was sipping Baileys, watching Only Fools and Horses on a giant screen through the French doors,” Peter recalled. “It was perfect... until it wasn’t.”

In an attempt to stop the patio from getting soaked, Kay had laid out a few of Clapton’s black-and-gold Versace towels under the pool. Big mistake. When the water was drained, he found the dye had bled into the tiles, staining the ultra-expensive stone. This prompted the comedian to panic and make the problem worse.

He continued: “I grabbed a few scourers and some Fairy Liquid and we all started scrubbing, but nothing was shifting it.”

Even worse, Clapton was baffled why Kay had even bothered with a paddling pool in the first place. Kay added: “He said, ‘Why didn’t you just turn on the pool heating?’ I had no idea it had heating — no b*gger told me!”

In desperation, the Phoenix Nights star hurried back to the “supermarché” to buy steel-wire brushes, industrial cleaner, and even a rake to fix the chaos. To make matters worse, he ended up flooding the housekeeper’s flowerbed with leftover water.

Kay shares the whole story in his new book, Peter Kay’s Diary, revealing he eventually called Clapton, known for hits like Layla and Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, to apologise and offered to pay for professional cleaning of the patio and plant replacement.

“I said I’d have it power-washed and tidy up the garden,” he said. “But I doubt I’ll be invited back any time soon...”

Elsewhere in his book, Kay also opened up on his terrifying health battle as he needed emergency surgery after suffering excruciating kidney stones.
