Buckingham Palace confirmed on Thursday evening that Prince Andrew will be officially stripped of his royal style, titles, and honours, meaning he will be known by an entirely different name. Earlier this month, on October 17, the King's younger brother announced that he would not use his Duke of York title in a public capacity.

It has been confirmed that the King began to take the first steps to remove Andrew's final honours today. A statement read: "These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him. Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse."

Removing royal titles is a complicated process and was last notably done by King George V during World War One when he revoked titles of his relatives who were on the German side.

The Titles Deprivation Act 1917 was used two years later to strip the titles from Leopold Charles, Duke of Albany, Earl of Clarence and Baron Arklow; Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale, Earl of Armagh; Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick, Prince of Great Britain and Ireland; and Henry, Viscount Taaffe of Corren and Baron of Ballymote.

At the same time, a Letters Patent from the same year changed the Royal Family's last name from the Germanic Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the more Anglican Windsor.

Several other royals also changed their names to follow suit. For example, Prince Louis of Battenberg became Lord Louis Mountbatten - the uncle of Prince Philip and mentor to King Charles.

This latest update comes after anti-monarchy campaign group, Republic, said it had contacted lawyers to consider private prosecution against Prince Andrew after allegations of sexual assault, corruption, and misconduct in public office came to light.

Republic, a pressure group in favour of abolishing the monarchy, has said it has taken the "unprecedented step" of approaching law firm, Edmonds Marshall McMahon, to investigate the allegations and initiate a private prosecution, if appropriate.

The group has long called for the police to investigate and prosecute Andrew and has criticised the political response to the scandal as weak, deferential and inadequate.

Speaking about the move, Republic's CEO, Graham Smith said: "If not us, then who? It's a devastating indictment on the UK's criminal justice system, police and politicians - not to mention the king and heir - that we must resort to a private prosecution.

"It should be a cause for concern that so many people believe - rightly in my view - that the royals are not treated equally in law. Equality in law is a basic tenet of democracy.

"I firmly believe there is strong enough evidence to justify a serious investigation. The authorities and politicians appear to want to look the other way, while minimising the accusations made against Andrew. The truth must prevail and justice must be seen to be done."
