Ryan Reynolds faced major backlash after joking about giving himself a vasectomy following the birth of his son.
During Thursday’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, where Reynolds was promoting a John Candy documentary, the Deadpool star, 48, revealed how life changed in his household after he and wife Blake Lively welcomed their first son, Olin, two.
He explained that the couple, who also share daughters James, 10, Inez, 9, and Betty, six, 'would never' have had four children if their baby boy had been born first.
'We live in a very... like there’s nothing violent in our home,' Reynolds began. 'There’s nothing creepy. [But Olin] came out with three things on his mind. It was violence, breasts and engines.'
'I really don’t understand where this comes from,' he continued. 'If I had like three boys at first, I would never... there’s no way. I would give myself a punching vasectomy. Like, there’s no way I would allow that to happen.'
The comment didn’t sit well with social media audiences, with critics quickly tearing into Reynolds’ comments as 'disgusting.'

Daily Mail has reached out for comment from Reynolds reps.
One Reddit user wrote, 'Ryan Reynolds clearly holds a lot of resentment towards his little boy. Who talks about their child like that?'
Another added, 'I have so much sympathy for Blake and Ryan’s children who are going to grow up and see their parents talk about them in such disparaging manners.'
A third chimed in, 'Exactly this, he says that before his boy came, there was nothing violent or creepy about our home, but now that the boy is here, it’s all violence and breasts.
'I actually feel sick. Who calls their brand new baby boy creepy and violent?'
Yet another posted, 'I can’t get over how disturbing it is, that Blake and Ryan talk about how obsessed their son is with Blake’s breasts and how she made him a boob cake for his first birthday because it was his favorite thing.
'And now Ryan is making him the butt of a joke on national TV about how he’s "creepy and violent."
'It’s beyond gross. We need to start fundraising for their kids’ counseling in the future.'
Another added, 'And one day his kid is going to grow up and see how much his parents resented him. What a clown.'

Fans also criticized Reynolds for hijacking the promotional tour for the John Candy documentary, noting he wasn’t even featured in the film and that director Colin Hanks and other creatives weren’t included in the promotion.
'And he’s not even the ‘star’ of the movie, like Blake was with It Ends With Us (I’ll give her that at least, for hijacking the promo and making every interview about her). The couple that just can’t quit their attention-seeking ways…' one fan wrote.
Another added, 'Ryan just hijacks the project and veers it off course with his stupid, irrelevant anecdotes.'
Of course, the Marvel star had support from fans as well, with one posting, 'I think Ryan is just being funny, and you can tell he really loves his kids.'
Another commented, 'It's called sarcasm, people.'
In June 2024, he told People that his family enjoys dual citizenship with Canada and the United States.
‘My kids, they have Canadian passports as well, and they feel a real connection to that,’ the North-of-the-border actor said.
‘It’s a point of pride of theirs. They’ve also spent huge amounts of their formative years in Canada and particularly Vancouver.’
!['We live in a very... like there¿s nothing violent in our home,' Reynolds said, adding, There¿s nothing creepy. [But Olin] came out with three things on his mind. The star added that he filmed the first two Marvel superhero movies in Vancouver, joking: 'I had only one child in Deadpool 1 and I had two on Deadpool 2, but hopefully we don’t do a Deadpool 8 because I don’t want eight kids.'
On a more heartfelt note, Reynolds said his kids ‘love being from Canada. They tell people they are. “Oh, I’m half Canadian, half American.”’
In April, he told TIME that he makes a point to spend regular time with his children, recalling a special moment with his eldest daughter James.
‘Last year I watched Back to the Future with my 8-year-old daughter. It’s become her favorite film,’ he said.
‘And for now, that’s enough for me — and for her. One more kid from one more generation sees what I saw.’
Reynolds and Lively wed in 2012 after meeting on the set of Green Lantern in 2010.
They welcomed their first child, James, in December 2014, followed by Ines on September 30, 2016.
Daughter Betty — whose name was revealed by Taylor Swift — was born just before the pandemic in October 2019, and their youngest, Olin, arrived in February 2023.
Meanwhile, Lively’s reported fallout with the godmother to her eldest children, pop superstar Taylor, 35, remains under scrutiny.
Fans speculated the pair were on good terms after Swift’s new album Life of a Showgirl included a track thought to reference the actress.
A source told DailyMail.com that Swift was allegedly ‘done’ with Lively after reports surfaced that the actress threatened to leak private texts unless Swift publicly supported her ongoing legal feud with Justin Baldoni, her It Ends With Us co-star.
Blake has been embroiled in that legal battle with Baldoni since January.
