Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman have made their return to live TV as they opened Strictly on Saturday night for the first time since announcing they are leaving the show.

The iconic duo made history as the BBC's first female presenting duo, but this week they sent shockwaves through the nation after they shared the news that the current series will be their last.

Speaking to viewers, Tess said at the top of the show: 'Just before we get started tonight, Claud and I announced this week that this will be our last series of Strictly Come Dancing.'

As the audience erupted, Claudia continued: 'We want to thank you for your beautiful messages.

'We've got another eight weeks on this incredible show and a Strictly champion to crown.'

Tess concluded: 'And we cannot wait to spend the rest of the series with you, with our amazing couples and these four [the judges].'

The pair addressed their exit at the top of the show, as Claudia said: 'We want to thank you for your beautiful messages. We've got another eight weeks on this incredible show'
Taking to Instagram to confirm the news on Thursday on their respective social media platforms, Tess and Claudia shared a video as they sat side by side explaining their decision

Performing first for Icons Week was Lewis Cope and his pro partner Katya Jones as they danced a Quickstep to Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash, earning 34 points.

Up next was Karen and Carlos as they took on a Rumba to Think Twice by Céline Dion.

Karen admitted she was 'a bit gutted' after a mishap during the dance, leaving her visibly upset. Claudia leaned in to grab her hand, saying: 'No baby, I don't want you to be upset.' Despite the blunder, the judges gave the pair 28 points.

Following them was Ellie and Vito - as they danced a Salsa to a Spice Girls medley.

Craig told her how she needed more 'hip action' which drew heavy boos from the crowd.

'You are growing with this competition and you are a force,' said Motsi as Ellie's face lit up and the audience cheered.

The actress was left stunned as Baby Spice Emma Bunton appeared on screen with a recorded video message as she hailed her their 'favourite'.

As they digested the message, Tess introduced Alex Kingston and Johannes with their Foxtrot to Here You Come Again by Dolly Parton.

With a nine from Anton, they scored a total of 38 points.

George and Alexis' Jive to As It Was by Harry Styles was branded 'flat-footed' by Craig, though Motsi said he was 'improving each week'.

Before his score of 27 was announced, George told Claudia: 'I feel like I'm not getting closer to be happy with it, so it's getting a bit annoying.'

Vicky Pattison and her partner Kai performed a Couple's Choice to Fight For This Love by Cheryl.

The Geordie star was praised by the judges who all agreed it was her best performance of the series.

Motsi said: 'I've never seen you perform better, this was your best dance.'

Vicky was left speechless when Claudia revealed Cheryl had recorded a video message, as the singer appeared on screen saying: 'Hey, it's Cheryl here.

'I first of all wanted to say congratulations on your Strictly success this far. You've been doing amazing.

'I'm very honored and humbled to be your chosen icon for this week. I know you've got it in you, cos you're a Geordie.

'So go out there, fight for your place, and I'm sending you loads of love. I'll be rooting for you from home.'

The show continued with Balvinder and Julian performing Quickstep to Texas Hold 'Em by Beyoncé, earning 28 points.

Harry and Karen's Argentine Tango to Caught Up by Usher left the judges divided, though they scored a total of 30 points.

After the roaring success of The Traitors, Claudia is going on to host a chat show with the same producers as Graham Norton, while it was always agreed she and Tess would leave the BBC show at the same time.

Some of the top names in telly have had their hat thrown into the ring to be Tess and Claudia's replacement including Hannah Waddingham, Rylan Clark and Zoe Ball.

Numerous Strictly professionals, past and present, have shared their opinions on Tess and Claudia's decision to leave.

'I will never forget Len Goodman trying to teach me what a cucaracha is (I still don't know) and the complete thrill and honour it was to work with Tess on the results show to cohosting on Saturday nights.

'Strictly is a magical, glittery, fake tanned train and it's been a privilege to be a tiny part of it.

'The extraordinary talent of the dancers, the band, the hair and makeup and costume teams, the unbelievable production crew and creatives - all utterly amazing.

'I've always believed it's best to leave a party before you're fully ready to go and I know the new hosts will be magnificent, I look forward to watching them take Strictly to new heights.

'As for Tess - I'm so so lucky I got to stand next to you. You're funny, kind, whip smart and a true friend and I love you.'

In recent years, Tess has made several hints about passing on the baton in regards to being main host, while Claudia revealed she encountered awkward conversations with Strictly bosses about the show's clashes with family life, namely taking her son to university to kickstart his first year away from home.
