A Utah State representative has proposed changing a road name honoring an LGBT+ activist to Charlie Kirk Boulevard.

Representative Trevor Lee proposed honoring Kirk, who was assassinated in Utah, by renaming Harvey Milk Boulevard after the father of two.

Harvey Milk was an LGBT+ activist who was heavily involved in San Francisco politics and the rights of gay citizens in the city.

Milk has no relation to Utah, which is why Lee proposed the Salt Lake City road, which is a portion of 900 South, to be renamed.

'From the vast majority of Utahans, they would say that Harvey Milk does not have any connection to Utah whatsoever,' he told ABC 4.

'But Charlie Kirk does now, especially after being assassinated in the state of Utah.'

Kirk, who resided in Arizona, was fatally shot in the neck in Orem at Utah Valley University, roughly 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Lee went on to say that it was 'extremely sad' that Kirk was shot dead because 'someone didn't agree' with his political opinion.

It is unclear if Lee's wishes will be made, as Utah municipal code dictates what power the state legislature has to rename state roads. However, 900 South is a state road

'I think it’s a good way to honor someone who always wanted to try to have discourse, and try to reach out to the other side of the aisle on different opinions,' he said of the name change proposal.

It is unclear if Lee's wishes will be made, as Utah municipal code dictates what power the state legislature has to rename state roads. However, 900 South is a state road.

Lee has previously been accused of being anti-LBGT+ for a bill that banned certain flags being hung in classrooms, and specifically mentioned it would not allow Pride flags.

'Parents could sue the school district if it’s violated,' he wrote on X in January.

Kirk, 31, was hit by a single bullet while speaking to a crowd at the public university in Orem at lunchtime on September 10 after speaking for about 20 minutes.

The father-of-two, known for his fierce MAGA views and combative debates with college kids across the country, collapsed immediately after being hit in the neck by a single shot from about 200 yards.

Kirk was answering a question about mass shootings mere seconds before he was struck. He was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition, but was declared dead two-and-a-half hours later.

Tyler Robinson, 22, has been arrested for the death of Kirk and charged with capital murder.

After allegedly gunning down Kirk, Robinson confessed to the killing in a message to his transgender partner, according to prosecutors.

He is alleged to have got in contact with his partner via text message, saying that he killed Kirk because he 'had enough of his hatred.'

Pressure has mounted on prosecutors and Utah Governor Spencer Cox to get the death penalty for Robinson, especially after they've repeatedly promised to do so following his arrest.

Who was Harvey Milk?

Harvey Milk was an LGBT+ activist who was heavily involved in San Francisco politics and the rights of gay citizens in the city.

Milk was a New York native born in the 1930s. He enlisted in the Navy after high school, but resigned in 1955 after he was questioned about his sexual orientation.

He went on to be a school teacher, stock analyst, and Broadway production associate, before becoming heavily involved in politics in the 1960s and 1970s.

He eventually moved to San Francisco in 1972, where he owned a camera shop. San Francisco had a growing gay community at the time.

Milk ran for San Francisco's Board of Supervisors, but narrowly lost. He was then appointed to the Board of Permits Appeals, making him the first openly gay commissioner in the US, according to ABC 4.

Milk was fatally shot in November 1978, alongside Mayor George Moscone, who appointed him to the appeals board, outside City Hall.

They were shot by former San Francisco Supervisor Dan White.
