The man who was wrongly convicted of killing TV presenter Jill Dando was too ill to appear in court today charged with rape and indecent assault.

Barry George was set to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court accused of attacking a 14-year-old girl almost 40 years ago.

The 65-year-old would have been in his twenties at the time. The sex attacks allegedly took place in west London in September 1987.

George was convicted in 2001 of murdering broadcast journalist and Crimewatch presenter Ms Dando, but he was acquitted unanimously in 2008 following a retrial.

He served several years of a life sentence in prison before being freed after experts raised concerns about the legal significance of a single particle of gunshot residue that was found in his overcoat pocket.

Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring accepted a letter from the GP of George, 65, of County Cork, Republic of Ireland, that set out longstanding health issues.

The district judge told the court that while precise details of the medical issues would remain private, he was 'satisfied that there is a good reason for him not to be here'.

Ms Dando, a journalist and Crimewatch presenter, was fatally shot on her front doorstep. Her murder remains unsolved

George is accused of one count of rape and two counts of indecent assault in September 1987 on an alleged victim who was aged 14 at the time.

The incidents are reported to have taken place in west London.

A hearing is due to take place at the Old Bailey on November 26, when it is expected George will appear via videolink. He was granted unconditional bail until then.

Ms Dando was forced to the ground and shot in the head on the doorstep of her home in Fuljham on April 26 1999. She was 37.

Her killer has never been found.

Following his acquittal, George went to live with his sister in Cork in 2010.

He has always denied any involvement in Ms Dando's murder and has called for Scotland Yard to reopen the investigation to identify the killer.

Milorad Ulemek, 57, a Serbian former paramilitary commander and convicted assassin who is serving a 40-year prison sentence, has been named as a possible suspect in the case.

After Ms Dando was killed, the BBC received a call saying she was targeted in revenge for a recent Nato attack on a TV station in Belgrade, Serbia, in which 17 people died.

Weeks earlier she had hosted a television appeal that raised £54 million for Kosovan refugees who fled Serbian paramilitaries during the civil war in the former Yugoslavia.
