Kristie Mewis and Sam Kerr have dropped a couple of hints about what they’re planning for their star-studded wedding later this year.
It’s been a whirlwind few years for the couple, who first met back in 2019 after Kerr moved to London to play for Chelsea.
The Matildas striker and West Ham midfielder announced that they were dating in 2021 and two years later, the couple announced that they were engaged.
Having also welcomed their first baby, Jagger, earlier this year, Kerr and Mewis have been getting excited plotting out their big day, which is set to take place in Perth in Australia, on New Year's Eve.
While speaking on The Women’s Game podcast with Mewis’ sister, and fellow US international star, Sam Mewis, the couple opened up on how the planning was going, with Kerr rubbishing claims that her soon-to-be wife was being a ‘bridezilla’.
‘I heard a rumour that Kristie is being a bridezilla,’ Sam Mewis asked Kerr on the podcast.
Kerr responded, laughing: ‘She's not been a bridezilla. It comes from a good place, but I had to have a talk with her this morning and say that: “Everyone is coming to celebrate us and you can't make their experience perfect.
‘"Like, we're going to offer what we offer and if they don't like it, then they'll organise something else or do something else. Like, we can't spoonfeed them. They’re all adults".'
‘Our wedding is going to be amazing. But Kristie obviously cares so much about people's experience that she's sacrificing my experience,' the Chelsea striker said, sending her wife and Sam into hysterics.
This year, Kerr has also made her long-awaited comeback after she suffered an ACL injury back in January 2024. After 692 days out of action, she made her comeback for Chelsea last month, before going on to make a return for Australia in their recent international friendly against Wales.
Kerr was then asked what she is most excited about for the wedding.
‘Is it the food, the music, the venue, the outfits?’ Sam Mewis asked.
‘I cannot wait till like we're all like blind drunk partying New Year's Eve in our suits and like just having a grand old time,’ Kerr said, laughing.
‘Like that will be a lifetime memory, you know, with all of our friends like all dressed up like
‘So it's not going to finally be saying I do to me?’ Mewis awkwardly interjected.
Kerr backtracked: ‘Yeah, I do. But I also have a confession that we kind of like were speaking about the thing [wedding] today and I was like: "Well, is Sam Mewis going to come on the bus?” Thinking it was like a rhetorical question that you would stay till 2:00am and party?
‘And she [Mewis] goes: "Well, I don't know." And I was like: "You're an idiot. Sam's going to be there and we’re going to drag Sam on the bus”.’
The Chelsea striker made headlines in February after Kerr was found not guilty of the alleged racially aggravated harassment of a British police officer.
Following a six-day trial at Kingston Crown Court in London, Kerr was cleared of any wrongdoing following an alleged event that took place following a night out in London on January 30, 2023 at Twickenham Police Station.
The court heard that the couple had been taken to the police station by a taxi driver who alleged they refused to pay after one of the pair threw up in the back of his taxi and smashed a rear window.
In the police station, Kerr was accused of abusing PC Stephen Lovell, while the footballers both claimed that they felt they were being kidnapped, after having thrown up in the taxi.
During the trial, Kerr took to the stand to give evidence on the case, where she also revealed to the court that the pair were due to get married in December and that they were expecting a baby boy.
It’s now just six weeks until the couple officially tie the knot, and Mewis couldn’t believe it.
‘Isn’t it crazy?’ Mewis said.
The former US National team star then revealed that she had been curating their set list for the night, opening up on what songs they’ll be dancing to late into the night.
‘I got some I got some requests yesterday for two songs,’ Mewis said. ‘Two Fred Again songs.
‘I sent them to Sam and I was like, Sam wants these on the playlist. And Sam's response to me was: “Fred Again will be on the playlist. Don't you worry”.’
Mewis added, though, that she had a couple of exciting things planned for the party but the 34-year-old was also keen to hear any other thoughts on what they could do at the wedding.
‘Fred Again is very well known in Australia, I will say,’ Mewis said. ‘Like don't you worry there'll be plenty on there when so when it strikes midnight, like I really need some ideas on like what we can do at midnight to like make it you know New Year's.
‘I need ideas. But there's this thing in Australia where you can't have fireworks. You can't have anything with fire.
‘Can we get glow stick glasses?’ Sam Mewis asked her sister.
Kristie replied: ‘I'm hating.... Have you seen how I'm not acknowledging what you're saying? Because like no. Literally no. Like, come up with something better. I need other people's opinions because we're not getting glasses, or glow sticks.
‘I literally want the party to like start at midnight. You know what I mean? I don't want it to be like, oh, like happy New Year's. All right. Like, let's get on the bus and go. Like, I want something to be like: "Oh my god, we got like a couple more hours left in us”.’
Mewis revealed that they’ll also be providing their guests with a little energy boost later on in the evening.
‘We'll do espresso martinis, but we also might do like a coffee like stand. Like, I feel like people do that.
‘Do you think people will want an espresso martini at midnight? No. Like, you're not going to drink one of those.
Sam replied: ‘No, I'd have like a shot of espresso, though.’
