A huge blaze has engulfed a football stadium after a fire erupted in the stands.

Around five engines were dispatched to Exeter City FC on Wednesday just after 10pm.

Footage of the inferno shows plumes of black smoke with bright orange and red flames leaping from the scene.

The blaze was ongoing in the early hours of Thursday morning, though Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said they had scaled back the response.

There have not yet been any reports of injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A spokesman for the service told the Daily Mail firefighters were using fans to extinguish the flames.

In clips shared online, witnesses can be heard describing how they had 'smelt smoke' and could 'hear an alarm'.

The capacity of St James Park, following completion of a £3.4 million redevelopment project, is 8,219.

Its record attendance is 20,984, who watched Exeter lose 4–2 to Sunderland in an FA Cup Sixth Round Replay in 1931.
