Liverpool confirmed that they are out of their rut with their best 90-minute performance in months to swat aside Real Madrid last night. Only Thibaut Courtois prevented Liverpool from racking up a heavy win over Los Blancos on a memorable Champions League night inside Anfield. I was there for the occasion and there were a few major talking points...

Dominik Szoboszlai

On a pitch with Jude Bellingham, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga, Dominik Szoboszlai was very comfortably the best midfielder on the pitch. Is that a surprise? On current form, no. But still, very few would have been putting Szoboszlai on the same level as those three mere weeks ago.

The Hungarian is in outrageous form at the moment. It's not just his obscene engine off the ball but his quality on it. So much of what Liverpool do well in possession runs through him right now, and then he adds to that by pressing so relentlessly out of it that it makes you tired just watching him. He runs for two players - although it has to be recognised that Florian Wirtz produced a phenomenal effort off the ball last night too.

In an era where stats matter most, Szoboszlai has two goals and five assists this season despite spending some games at right-back. He's a strong contender to be the next captain whenever Virgil van Dijk leaves. It worked out pretty well for Liverpool the last time an all-action midfielder wearing the No.8 shirt skippered the team...

Real Madrid's big guns

Real Madrid were very disappointing and in particular Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Vini Jr who barely had a say in the game. Bar one first-half moment in which he forced a fine save after beating Ibrahima Konate, Bellingham was outshone by all of the Liverpool trio of Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.

It was the Englishman who gave away the foul that led to the only goal of the game. And the Liverpool backline, namely Andy Robertson and Conor Bradley, ensured Mbappe and Vini Jr did extremely little.

The Brazilian spent more time playacting than doing anything to impact the result. The only two visiting players to emerge with any credit were the sublime Courtois who made four or five excellent saves and Eder Militao, who was pretty solid at centre-back. Otherwise, a lot of very underwhelming performances from a star-studded squad.

Trent coming on

Everyone inside Anfield couldn't believe it when they saw Trent Alexander-Arnold preparing to come on. We all knew what the reception would be - and understandably so. Regardless of what he did for Liverpool and whether you think that means he should be cheered not jeered, remember that he also rejected an extremely high wage to stay at Liverpool and gave up the opportunity to captain his boyhood club to major trophies.

That is always going to sting the locals. It is a slap in the face to those who would give absolutely anything to have been in Trent's place and who also shielded him so fervently against the criticism the full-back received from outside of Merseyside for his defending.

It was a surprise then to see Xabi Alonso, a man who knows the Liverpool crowd well, subject Alexander-Arnold to those inevitable boos with so little time left. It only gave Anfield another lift and help them push their team to victory.

The VAR overturn

That surely has to be the first time in history a referee has gone to the VAR screen to review a potential penalty, having already awarded a free-kick to Liverpool, only to end up giving a free-kick to Real Madrid instead.

The decision not to award a penalty is probably the right one on reflection - though it is an ongoing debate on social media. Aurelien Tchouameni's hand was in very close proximity to his torso when he blocked Dominik Szoboszlai's shot.

But certainly in the Champions League we've seen pretty similar incidents result in a penalty. Regardless of whether it was the correct call or not, it was just a bizarre incident to experience from inside the stadium and it took an absolute age to get to the final decision.
