The John Lewis Christmas advert has long been a festive staple, setting the bar for other retailers since the department store began producing them nearly 20 years ago. These adverts are typically heartwarming and emotional, featuring music that is sure to instil a sense of holiday spirit in viewers.

When I was offered the chance to attend a private screening of the 2025 advert in Oxford Circus, it was an opportunity I simply couldn't pass up - so what does this year's advert bring to the table?

John Lewis has opted to steer clear of celebrities and influencers this time around, instead casting actors for a father-and-son-themed advert. The scene opens with a family—a mother, father, and son—in their kitchen, having just unwrapped their Christmas presents. The son, who appears to be a young man, perhaps in his first year of university, is engrossed in his new headphones, while his dad finds one last gift under the tree.

Upon opening it, he discovers that his son has gifted him a vinyl record of the 1990s hit "Where Love Lives" by Alison Limerick. As soon as he plays it, he's immediately transported back to his younger days, dancing in a Brixton nightclub.

Across the dancefloor, he spots his son. Suddenly, his son transforms back into a baby, and the father is overcome with nostalgia and emotion as he cradles the tiny infant in his arms.

Before long, he's back in his home in the present day, giving his grown-up son a heartfelt hug - unable to put into words just how much he clearly loves him. The duo are united by the same melody, played in varying styles, creating a heartwarming display of affection.

This marks the first time a John Lewis Christmas advert has focused on the bond between a father and son, offering a refreshing viewing experience.

While I thought it was very touching, some viewers might find the absence of traditional Christmas tunes slightly disappointing, as the advert could have done with a dash of sleighbell magic.

Nevertheless, they may fall in love with the non-festive song choice, similar to when Lily Allen covered Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know" for the 2013 John Lewis advert as part of their "Bear and the Hare" campaign.

The John Lewis 2025 Christmas advert will air during the Great British Bake Off final tonight (November 4) on Channel 4.
