Outlander enthusiasts have been left in shock after a sharp-eyed fan may have unearthed a clue to the show's greatest enigma: the ghost of Jamie Fraser (portrayed by Sam Heughan), reports the Daily Record.

From the inaugural episode and indeed the first Outlander novel released in 1991, followers have been attempting to decipher how the 18th-century Highlander materialised in 1940s Inverness.

Frank Randall (played by Tobias Menzies) stumbled upon Jamie's apparition, who was peering up at Claire's (Caitríona Balfe) bedroom amidst a tempest.

Claire was nonchalantly brushing her hair as she stared into a mirror when the storm caused a power cut and she had to resort to candles.

Meanwhile, Frank was left rattled when he attempted to converse with Jamie's spectre, who promptly disappeared before his very eyes.

An Outlander devotee took to Reddit to discuss the scene, explaining how they'd been investigating Halloween customs and came across a ritual involving mirrors in Llewellyn's Sabbat Essentials on Samhain.

The ritual entailed discovering the identity of one's future spouse by sitting in front of a mirror, eating an apple and combing your hair.

The user pointed out that although there was no apple in the ghost scene, the Outlander rendition could have been a variation of the ritual.

The Redditor, known as wanderthehalls, then proposed: "So here is my theory: Claire was partaking in a ritual without knowing it.

"She didn't know she could travel through time either, but by George she did it. Why not have more accidental power, especially in this magical season of the Wheel of the Year?".

"By combing her hair and staring into that mirror, she welcomed her future husband, Jamie, from the past and beyond the veil of death. And furthermore, their destined love was so strong, even Frank could see Jamie's apparition.

"If Claire had merely peeked over her shoulder as the tradition states, she too would have seen Jamie in his misty Highland dress."

The theory sparked a wave of responses from fans, with one saying: "This may be the first theory about Jamie's ghost that I love!".

Another fan commented: "Wow I got chills reading that, I love this theory!" while another added: "Well done! I believe this may be something."

One person chimed in: "I'm on board with this theory. Makes good sense to me."

Adding to the speculation, another fan said: "Because that area holds the memory of ancient traditions and superstitions, Claire's consciousness was primed to be affected by the ritual. Mrs. Graham also suggested she may have two husbands in this "lifetime" while reading Claire's palm. Therefore, her subconscious was "tuned" into the collective consciousness of which this normal ritual of brushing one's hair puts you into the agreement to manifest her husband(s)."

Outlander enthusiasts will have to hold their breath until next year when the eighth and final season is released to find out the truth behind the ghostly figure.

However, Heughan was already privy to the ghost's secret, as author Diana Gabaldon had shared it with him to ensure he portrayed the scene accurately for the storyline.

He had previously disclosed that he was given a sneak peek at the concluding pages of the final book early in the process, providing him with an insight into Outlander's ultimate destination.
