Stranger Things actor David Harbour has acknowledged that his character Jim Hopper's toxic masculinity has "strained relationships" throughout the popular Netflix science fiction series.
The actor's remarks follow after his co-star Millie Bobby Brown rejected suggestions that Harbour bullied her whilst working together on set.
Series five has at last commenced, with the opening four episodes of the eight-part season being made available last Thursday (27th November).
After their confrontation with Vecna (portrayed by Jamie Campbell Bower), the Hawkins group are gearing up for a second encounter by deploying Hopper on perilous 'crawl' operations into the Upside Down.
During this latest instalment, numerous members of the cast find themselves in conflict, including Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton) vying for Nancy Wheeler's (Natalia Dyer) romantic attention, whilst Steve also clashes with Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), reports the Mirror.
Similar tensions exist within Hopper's bond with Eleven (Brown), as the duo must rebuild their fractured trust after becoming trapped in the Upside Down whilst searching for Nancy and Mike's (Finn Wolfhard) younger sibling, Holly (Nell Fisher).
"I think the biggest challenge for him is having to live with this toxically masculine heroism that contains deep love but also deep betrayal of the people that love him," Harbour revealed during discussions with Netflix. "But he sees it as his only answer, I think, and I think that's what ultimately makes it beautiful, but it winds up straining a lot of relationships as well when people find out about it.
"I think he has a lot of guilt about what he's doing, but he has to do it."
As the season opens, Hopper is still recuperating from his ordeal in the Russian prison whilst navigating his relationship with Joyce (Winona Ryder) and raising Eleven.
Intent on protecting her loved ones, Eleven is refining her powers but must remain concealed from the military, who have placed Hawkins under lockdown and are desperate to recapture the superpowered teenager.
When she threatens to reveal herself, Hopper's fatherly instincts kick in - but has he crossed the line into being overprotective?
"Hopper is kind of a harder man from a different time, who doesn't know how to express himself," Harbour explained.
"I think he's a deeply good guy, and I think he's misguided in the way that he expresses it.
"And I think there is, you know, a purpose in art to be able to connect with those people and maybe try to reveal something about what that means as a person in our world.
"I think he's sort of a beautiful old stalwart of a character that I love and I hope other people love as well."
Find out whether Eleven and Hopper can locate Holly in the opening four episodes of Stranger Things season five, with four additional episodes arriving in December.
Stranger Things season 5, part 2 will be released 25th December on Netflix, followed by the finale on 31st December.
